INTRODUCTION
In the 1980's, the Siberian was imported into East Germany from the Soviet Union – it became very widespread there and known under the name 'Siberian Forest Cat'. After 1990, this very natural breed became known to many cat lovers in Western Europe. To differentiate more from the Norwegian Forest, to which it bears a similarity, the 'Forest' was removed from the name in 1991 when the standards were formalised. The ancestors of the Siberian cat certainly include the legendary red and red-white Tobolsk cat- the first imports into East Germany had exactly these colours.

APPEARANCE
A powerful, medium-sized cat with a heavily muscled body, it has a triangular head with balanced proportions. The ears are broad at the base, rounded at the tips and have tufts of fur. The large diagonally-positioned eyes should be of one colour only, being either green or amber. The Siberian cat stands on high, powerful, not too long legs with large round paws which have tufts of fur between the toes. The tail is of medium length and is thick with luxuriant fur. The semi-long top coat is flat and coarse, and is filled out with a lush undercoat – it is longer on the chest and forms 'breeches' on the back legs.
