INTRODUCTION
Some say that it was Canada, others Mexico and a third group the USA. The fact is that it was Dutch breeders who started the first breeding programmes of hairless cats. International cooperation between Canada, the Netherlands and the USA was responsible for quickly creating a breed of cat which enjoys remarkable health nowadays from an initially very narrow breeding basis. Of course, Sphynx cats have different requirements when it comes to their upkeep than their hairier relations. They love warm places, need a greater amount of calories and must be protected from direct sunlight and extreme weather effects. In Germany, some animal protection societies have reservations about breeding and keeping Sphynx cats as pets.

APPEARANCE
Medium-sized, fairly long cat with strong muscle structure but a fine bone structure. The well-developed stomach constantly gives the impression that the cat has just been fed. The rounded head is somewhat longer than it is wide, and has large ears which are rounded at the edges. Eyes are large, wide and set at a slight slant. They are either green or hazelnut brown in colour. The Sphynx has long, thin legs with oval paws, the pads of which are stronger than in other cats. The Sphynx is practically bald, its skin is warm to the touch and has definite folds in several places including the shoulders, neck and on the head. Hair on the tip of the tail and on the stomach is allowed, but whiskers are rare.
