INTRODUCTION
Cats with ruffled or curly hair appear time and again in litters but are not bred from as they are deemed non-standard. It was only in 1950 in Cornwall (hence the name Cornish) that the curly coat of a kitten in a litter of house cats prompted breeder Nina Ennismore to breed the cat with its mother. The offspring of this breeding prompted interest from the experts. The Cornish Rex breed was created. It was crossed with the Russian Blue, to improve the gene pool and the species. Over the years a cat has emerged which has the sleek body characteristics of the European Shorthair combined with curly hair. In 1967, the Cornish Rex was officially recognised, but nowadays it is more common in the USA than in Europe.

APPEARANCE
Well formed cat which is medium-sized, sleek and muscular, with a wedge-shaped head, which is around a third longer than it is wide. The large ears which are wide at their base and taper to a point are set high on the head and are well covered with fine hairs. The eyes are medium-sized and almond shaped and sparkle a copper or amber colour. It is very important that the colour of the eyes is uniform. The long, straight, thin legs give the impression of height. The tail is long, thin and ends in a point and is covered with curly hair. The overall coat is short and thick, slightly plush and always curly or wavy. It has no beard hair and all colours and patterns are recognised.
