INTRODUCTION
Although the country of origin for these cats is recognised as the USA, the Egyptian Mau is thought to date back much earlier, to 1953, in Italy. A lady from Italian nobility brought back a cat from Egypt, which she bred with a tom from Syria. In 1956, she is thought to have imported the first offspring produced by cross-breeding with the parents into the USA. A breeding programme started in the USA to establish the characteristics of the cat's body, which in earliest forms resembled icons of cats in the tombs of pharaohs, especially the sleek body and the speckled coat. The CFA recognised the breed in 1968, but it was not until 20 years later than the first breeding pair arrived in Europe, in Switzerland. The FIFe recognised the breed in 1992.

APPEARANCE
Medium-length, graceful, medium-sized cat with well developed muscles. A loose fold of skin stretching from the flank to the hind knee is very typical. The medium-length head is wedge-shaped with gentle contours. The medium-sized ears are wide at the base and taper to a point. The almond-shaped eyes do not look oriental because of their size, the eyes are gooseberry green in colour. The legs, which are in proportion with the body, are longer at the back and have thin, dainty, slightly oval paws. The distinctive feature about the short, silky, flat coat is the multiple rings around each individual hair, which are so prominent in the typical colour of the Egyptian Mau. The cat is bred in three colours: Silver, Bronze and Smoke.

CHARACTERISTICS
Very spirited, will want to vent its great desire to be active to the full, needs a lot of care and attention, is stubborn and intrepid.
