INTRODUCTION
The Ragdoll is noteworthy for several reasons. It is probably the only breed of cat that has been registered for a patent. This was done by one Ann Baker, who presented the product of her breeding activities to the public in 1965. She took the name from a much-loved American toy, the 'rag doll', which she always had with her. She even went so far as to attribute a complete lack of sensitivity to pain to her new breed. The fact is that the Ragdoll relaxes completely when picked up, and hangs so loosely that you would think that it had no bones. It is important that the cat is equally tall at the shoulders and hind legs. A further typical characteristic is the bloated stomach often found in older cats, which does not hinder the animals' agility. Toms are noticeably larger and strong than the female of the breed, and are fully grown at around 3 years old.

APPEARANCE
Large, tall, muscular cat with a broad chest. The hindquarters are particularly strongly built, heavily muscled and noticeably longer than the front legs. This is why there is a typical Ragdoll walk, which has long been said to give the impression that the cat is unable to walk properly. The medium sized head is wedge-shaped with slightly forward positioned ears and large round blue eyes. The paws are compact, large and round with tufts of fur between the toes. Long and of medium thickness at the base, the bushy fur-covered tail reaches at least to the shoulder. The thick coat of the Ragdoll is semi-long to long, and silky with an unmistakeable gleam. The impression is of a masked cat, where a white coat on the body is set against darker colouring on the head, ears, legs and tail.
