🐶 Po is a 5-year-old Shar Pei cross Staffy, large and solid in build, with a deeply affectionate nature. Inside the home he is gentle, loving and devoted to his people. He thrives on closeness and bonds strongly.
🐶 Po was surrendered to our rescue and rehomed three weeks ago. His new family truly cared for him and tried to make it work.
Sadly, their expectation was for a dog who is highly social and comfortable greeting and interacting with unfamiliar dogs regularly. Po is not that dog. He does not not enjoy close face-to-face greetings with unfamiliar dogs. This mismatch led to a couple of stressful situations when walks when he was pushed face-to-face to other dogs. On that occasion we were quite close to the other dog- we came round a corner and it was right there. If it had been on the other side of the road he might’ve been better.
He doesn’t bark on dogs on walks - he whines and pulls but that is manageable as long as the other dog stays calm. He is only difficult to control when the other dog barks at him, then he twists and snaps at the lead.
🐶 Currently family like Po a lot they tried to work with the trainer they found online. Unfortunately we were extremely concerned after seeing a video from the training session with dodgy behaviourist arranged by the adopters. The handling approach used was inappropriate and aversive, which only escalated Po’s stress. We shared the video with the qualified behaviourist we work with, and his response was clear: “That video is shocking. I wish I could be closer to Po, as this would be a case I’d love to work with. It’s very rewarding and an amazing experience to see dogs like Po change when they are handled by the right professional guidance. “
He has offered discounted coaching and a month of structured support for Po’s future family.

💔 Rescue Background
Po had lived in a family home for four years before circumstances changed and he was surrendered. He knows home life, routine and attachment. He is not a kennel dog by nature — he is a companion dog who wants stability.
🐕 More About Po
Inside the house, Po is described as sweet, gentle and loving. He settles well, enjoys cuddles, and likes to be close — often choosing the sofa or bed beside his humans. He is fully house trained and knows basic commands. He enjoys games like fetch and responds well to training.
His challenges are specific to close interactions with unfamiliar dogs. He does not enjoy being approached directly or having dogs in his face. This is not uncommon and does not make him a “bad” dog — it means he needs respectful management and clear boundaries on walks.
He can experience some separation distress initially but settles once he understands routine. Lead walking is improving and he is responsive to guidance.
🏡 Ideal Home
Po needs an adult household, because he is large and powerful dog. He must be the only dog in the home. His new home should understand that he does not need dog park socialising or forced greetings. Calm walks, structure and positive reinforcement training will suit him far better than busy social settings.
🐶 Po is not a social butterfly with other dogs — but he is deeply loving people. He needs humans who accept him as he is and help him to improve with other dogs (which is absolutely possible under professional guidance) if that’s desired. In the right home, he is loyal, affectionate and steady.
🩺 Health Information
🐶 Po is fully healthy. Neutered. Has all core vaccines done and is microchipped.
