Description

Maggie is a 9 year old medium sized dog weighing around 19kg. She is neutered, fully vaccinated and has no diagnosed physical health conditions. Maggie is currently prescribed Fluoxetine (Reconcile) to help manage anxiety. She has previously been prescribed Trazodone by a behaviourist, although this medication is no longer used as her owner felt it significantly reduced her quality of life. Maggie is a sensitive and anxious dog who struggles particularly with unfamiliar environments, other dogs and some strangers. Despite these challenges, she is described as a loving, intelligent and loyal companion within the home. Once Maggie trusts someone she is very affectionate and enjoys being close to her family, often seeking out attention and companionship. She thrives in a calm and predictable environment and enjoys feeling included in family life. Maggie currently lives with three children and has done so for the past six years. She has lived comfortably with children aged approximately 5, 11 and 13 and has shown herself to be gentle and affectionate with them. She has also been comfortable with visiting children in the home and has generally responded well to them. A future home with calm, respectful children aged around eight and over may therefore be possible, provided they understand Maggie’s need for space and routine. Maggie currently lives with cats and is generally able to coexist with them within the home. Occasionally she may try to herd or chase them, but overall she has learned to live alongside them. Outside of the home she will chase cats, so any introductions to new cats would need to be carefully managed. Maggie does not live with other dogs and struggles significantly with dogs when outside. She is highly reactive on walks and may bark, lunge and pull when she sees another dog. According to her owner, Maggie has never had a positive interaction with another dog since being in her care. Because of this, Maggie would be best suited to living as the only dog in the household. Within the home Maggie can be wary of unfamiliar people, particularly men. When visitors arrive she may bark, growl or behave defensively, especially if the doorbell triggers her reaction. Management strategies such as keeping her on a lead and providing enrichment like a lick mat have helped her settle when new people are present. During the recent home assessment she remained calm when a visitor entered the home alongside her owner and was able to relax with enrichment while the assessor was present. Maggie has never bitten anyone, although there was one reported incident where the owner’s ex-husband stated she had nipped him. This occurred while he was stepping over her and may have startled her, and the owner reports that this behaviour is out of character. Maggie previously showed some mild guarding behaviour around high value foods such as raw food or bones, but this behaviour has not been seen recently. She has no ongoing resource guarding concerns. Maggie knows basic commands and is intelligent and responsive within the home environment, although she has no reliable recall as she is not allowed off lead due to safety concerns. She wears a collar and lead and is able to walk calmly in low stimulation environments. During the assessment walk she walked quietly on lead and appeared relaxed, although no dogs or many people were encountered at the time. Her owner reports that she becomes highly reactive when she does see dogs or unfamiliar people while walking. Maggie’s current exercise routine is limited due to her anxiety outdoors. She is generally walked twice a week for around fifteen to twenty minutes, usually late at night when there are fewer people and dogs around. She is often very alert when outside and struggles to relax in busy environments. Her owner acknowledges that Maggie may also pick up on her own anxieties when walking her, which may contribute to Maggie’s reactions. Maggie spends much of her day resting in her bed in her daughter’s bedroom and is generally calm and relaxed in the home environment. She enjoys enrichment activities such as lick mats, snuffle toys, tug toys and food-based games, and she particularly enjoys finding food hidden around the house. She is fed a kibble diet. Maggie is fully toilet trained and settles well when left alone. She does not display significant separation anxiety, although she may occasionally whine briefly when her owner leaves the house. She sleeps overnight in her daughter’s bedroom and has a consistent daily routine. Maggie finds car travel extremely stressful and suffers from motion sickness, which limits her exposure to new places. As a result, she has had relatively little experience outside her immediate environment, and it is believed that a lack of socialisation with the outside world may have contributed to her anxiety and reactivity. The reason for rehoming is that her owner feels she is no longer able to provide the environment Maggie needs to reach her full potential. The family are planning to downsize within the next seven to eight months, which may result in a home without a garden. As Maggie already struggles with walking due to her reactivity, access to a secure garden is considered essential for her wellbeing. Her owner recognises that Maggie would likely benefit from a quieter environment and a more experienced handler who can help her build confidence. Maggie is looking for a calm, experienced home where her anxiety can be managed with patience and understanding. A quiet household with a secure garden, limited visitors and owners willing to continue working on her confidence and training would give her the best opportunity to thrive.
