Bruno – approx. 12–15 month old Pointer
boy from Spain🐾
For the past 15 years Starfish has worked alongside a wonderful shelter in Spain called Noah’s ARC. Twice a year I travel there with my own dogs and spend several weeks helping at the shelter, and whenever possible I choose one or two dogs who I feel would really struggle to find homes in Spain and offer them a lifeline here in the UK.
Bruno was a bit of a last-minute addition to Kyle and Jackson, but sometimes a dog just quietly works his way into your heart and makes the decision for you.
I first noticed Bruno while we were carrying out an assessment on a new dog at the shelter, using parallel walking with Bruno alongside him. The other dog was quite reactive towards Bruno, but Bruno’s response was honestly so impressive. He stayed calm, friendly and completely non-confrontational throughout, showing such a lovely, steady nature.
Earlier that same day I had watched him being introduced into a new group of dogs. They were all a little bolshie with him at first, but again Bruno was so gentle, calm and sensible. He took it all in his stride, read the situation beautifully and settled himself almost immediately. In a busy shelter environment, where dogs are often under pressure and overwhelmed, that sort of temperament really stands out.
Bruno came into the shelter as a stray along with his brother, who has already been lucky enough to find a home in Spain. Sadly, Bruno’s chances there are much slimmer.
Large black dogs are so often overlooked, and in Spain they can wait a very long time for someone to notice them. He is also a slightly shy boy when he first meets new people, but there is nothing difficult about him at all – it’s simply that he needs a moment to take things in and realise he is safe. Once he does, you can see what a lovely, sweet-natured boy he really is.
Like many of our Spanish dogs, Bruno probably hasn’t had a great deal done with him in his short life, but what he does have is a beautiful nature and a willingness to trust. Between now and when he travels, the volunteers in Spain will continue getting him out and about, helping him experience different situations and build his confidence, but I honestly think Bruno is the sort of dog who will adjust very quickly once he is in a home environment with kindness, patience and guidance.
Bruno is also a Pointer, so any potential home will need to understand the breed and be able to meet the needs of an active young dog. He will need plenty of exercise, stimulation and companionship, and would be best suited to adopters who appreciate that young Pointer types are not couch potatoes – they are clever, energetic dogs who thrive when given the right outlet and guidance.
From everything we have seen of Bruno so far, I do feel he would really benefit from a home with another friendly, well-balanced dog to help him settle and continue to grow in confidence. He takes great comfort from the company of other dogs and seems to read them beautifully, so I think a canine companion in the home would help him flourish.
Bruno has been neutered, fully vaccinated and blood.
He is such a lovely, gentle lad and far too nice a dog to stay unseen in kennels, waiting for prospective adopters to walk past without noticing him.
He deserves so much more than that. Bruno may not be the one shouting the loudest for attention, but sometimes it’s the quiet ones with the softest souls who deserve to be noticed the most.
We’ll update Bruno’s profile as we get more feedback from his adventures in Spain, but for now I wanted to introduce this very special boy and show you exactly what I see in him. ❤️
