Description

Tom is a medium sized dog that found himself in a Romanian rescue in May 25 and was there until making his way to our Essex Kennels in February 26. In Romania he was described as great with dogs, friendly and excitable with people. He is microchipped, vaccinated and neutered. He is currently receiving eye drops for an eye problem which we would support if he moves into a home before it's resolved. Behaviour & Temperament Summary – Tom General Temperament Tom is described as a very friendly, enthusiastic, and people-oriented dog. When someone enters his kennel he becomes highly excited, often: Jumping up Pushing his body close to the person Occasionally giving gentle mouthy nibbles to hands This type of mouthing is commonly seen in overexcited or socially motivated dogs, especially those seeking interaction. Importantly, there is no history of aggression, and the behaviour appears playful rather than threatening. There have been no recorded incidents of biting or growling toward people. Resource Guarding Tom shows no signs of food or resource guarding. Evidence given: Another dog can take treats from him without resistance He makes no attempt to defend food or resources This suggests a very tolerant and non-possessive temperament around food. Handling & Equipment Tom enthusiastically accepts: Collar Harness Lead He appears excited and eager when being prepared for a walk. Lead Walking Behaviour Tom is reported to walk very well on lead: No pulling Calm and controlled walking Generally unreactive to surroundings The only noted sensitivity is slight nervousness when large vehicles (vans or lorries) pass, which is a common environmental concern for many rescue dogs. Behaviour Around People & Dogs on Walks Tom behaves very well when walking with other people and dogs. Observations include: Walks calmly alongside other dogs No reactivity or behavioural issues Comfortable with whoever is handling him This suggests good social tolerance and adaptability during walks. Behaviour Around Children Tom has been child tested previously in Romania. However, staff recommend homes with older children (10+) or dog savvy children 8+ due to: His high excitement levels Occasional gentle mouthing behaviour This recommendation is based on management of enthusiasm, not aggression. Behaviour Around Other Dogs Tom appears social and relaxed around dogs in the kennel environment. Observations include: Positive interactions with other kennel dogs No aggression Calm at times and excitable at others he appears dog-friendly. Behaviour Around Cats Tom has been cat tested previously in Romania. No behavioural concerns were reported from that test. Kennel Behaviour In the kennel Tom: Toilets inside the kennel Is not destructive However, he shows signs of attention-seeking vocalisation. Separation Behaviour Tom shows signs of separation-related vocalisation. When left alone: He barks repeatedly for attention Vocalisation continues until someone approaches As soon as a person comes near his kennel, he immediately settles This behaviour suggests attention frustration rather than severe separation anxiety, but it still indicates he prefers frequent human interaction. He is currently left: Around 2 hours during the day Overnight until staff return Tom's carers say 'Tom LOVES people & treats, he also loves going for long walks over the field. He just needs a home where he is going to receive lots of love, attention & long walks! Tom is an amazing boy & with the right adopter I believe he will be the perfect companion & bring a lot of happiness along with him'.
