Meet Aspen!
Aspen is one of Holly’s incredible puppies, and his story is one of true strength and survival. His mum was found just before Christmas by the river - freezing, starving, and doing everything she could to protect her newborn puppies. Thankfully, they were brought into safety, and these pups have since grown up in the shelter where they’ve blossomed into the happy, playful puppies they were always meant to be.
Sadly, when Aspen was a few months old, parvo hit the shelter and not every puppy was as lucky. Against the odds, all of Holly’s puppies survived. Aspen has shown just how resilient and strong he is, and now he is fully recovered, fighting fit, and ready to find his forever home.
If we had to describe 9 month old Aspen, we’d probably call him our little sheep. Where the others go, Aspen follows.
When our volunteers arrive, he comes running to the front of his pen with his siblings. He’ll lick their hands through the bars, take treats and eagerly join in with all the excitement. But when someone actually steps inside the pen, Aspen isn’t quite sure what to do. He’ll initially retreat and watch the others and when he sees his brother Robin go forward, he does too!
Aspen takes so much reasurrance from the dogs around him which is why we feel he would benefit from having another friendly, confident dog in his future home. Someone to follow into the garden, someone to watch when something new happens, someone to show him that this enormous new world he is about to discover really isn’t so frightening.
Aspen doesn’t need someone to expect him to be brave from day one. He needs patience, kindness and the opportunity to work things out at his own pace.
Aspen is already quite leggy and growing fast, with an expected adult weight of around 30kg. As a larger dog, he will need all the usual puppy training and an adopter who is committed to guiding him through the teenage phase. This stage can be challenging, but with patience and consistency, it leads to an incredibly rewarding bond.
Aspen has already overcome more than most, and now he just needs someone to give him the loving home he truly deserves.
