Description
Pingu is a large sized, long haired female dog that is likely a Mioritic Shepherd mix. She was saved from the Codlea kill shelter and spent a short time in a Romanian rescuers shelter before making her way to our Cheshire kennels in February 26. She is microchipped, vaccinated and spayed with no known health issues.
Pingu has not lived in a home and will need help with toilet training and getting used to being in a home environment.
Behaviour & Temperament Summary
General temperament:
The dog is very friendly, highly excitable, and bouncy, especially when people approach or enter the kennel. She appears to enjoy human interaction and greets people enthusiastically.
Human interaction:
No history of biting or growling at people.
Friendly with people encountered on walks.
Has not been formally child-tested while in kennels.
Due to her size and excitable nature, she is considered most suitable for homes with children aged 12 years or older.
Handling & equipment:
Comfortable wearing a collar, harness, and lead.
On walks she pulls on the lead and can be quite strong, so lead training would benefit her.
Behaviour around other dogs:
Has previously lived with other dogs in a kennel environment.
Generally friendly but has shown some inconsistent behaviour in kennels, including:
Being dog selective, being fine with another dog whilst growling toward another. She would need meets with another dog from a home to ensure they get on first.
Displays food guarding towards other dogs, but not towards people.
Could potentially live with another dog, but management around feeding would be necessary.
Resource guarding:
Guards food from other dogs.
Prey drive:
Has shown some prey drive, so caution is advised around small animals.
Cats:
No history with cats, so compatibility is unknown.
Kennel behaviour:
Toilets in the kennel.
Not destructive.
Shows no signs of separation anxiety.
Being left alone:
Has previously been left overnight with no issues.
Behaviour when left: settles and sleeps.
Pingus carer says 'Very friendly and people oriented, is selective with dogs, I think she’d prefer to be an only dog as she is more of a people dog. She is strong on the lead so would need someone confident with this and big dogs. She is very energetic so would need lots of stimulation in the home and decent walks. She could do with some extra training as well'
