🌟🩵 RUFUS UPDATE FROM VOLUNTEER WHO VISITS HIM 🩵🌟
As everyone who follows his journey will know Rufus is almost coming up to having spent a year of his short life so far living in kennels. It’s heartbreaking for me it truly is every time I see him he is so loving and still has that beautiful spark in his eyes and in his soul. I cannot understand why he is still there, but as always we will never give up hope for this beautiful boy 🙏🏻
To help Rufus in his journey I’ve been doing a lot more work with him to try and get started with behavioural conditioning and helping him overcome his reactivity. One of the reasons he was returned to kennels (after just 5 days!) was for a couple reasons. We were told that he is very reactive towards wheelchairs and mobility scooters and that he was uncontrollable with how reactive he is towards other dogs.
So i’m doing this update to show that’s not entirely true. Here are some truths about Rufus:
🐕 Yes, one of his challenges is that he can be reactive out on walks towards other dogs. This is not fear based, nor is it aggression, it’s just over stimulation, frustration and heightened arousal, something that I’m working through with him because don’t all dogs deserve help and support?
🚗 Rufus is not reactive towards cars or wheelchairs 🙃 he’s certainly very aware of them and this may lend itself to a build up of stimulation - look up Bucket Theory with dogs! So it’s all about not pushing him to do too much too soon or go too far from his comfort zone on a walk.
🏃♂️💨 Rufus doesn’t need fast paced lengthy runs, he absolutely loves his quiet country walks, it’s not about distance it’s about letting him take in his surroundings, explore his environment at his pace and keeping him safe whilst building his confidence 🙏🏻
Guys, this is a dog who will give you his all, every bit of love and trust he can offer you he will, if in return you can show him kindness, respect and affection. This means giving him space when he needs it, not giving up on him because he barks occasionally on a walk.
Sometimes I think it’s easy to forget what rescuing a dog actually means. It’s not just “adopt don’t shop” - when you rescue you truly are saving a life ❤️ 🐾
🌟 Onto the exciting bit of my update - Rufus might have a new best friend! He’s been meeting one of my own dogs who has been helping him with some exposure work and for the first time I took them both on a lovely little walk together! 🤩
Now bear in mind my boy Loki is anything but perfect as you’ll see in the videos 🤣 for the most part he has great recall but all my dogs still have a little bit of “wild” in their nature so he has selective hearing! It was however incredible to see Rufus go from startled at first when Loki ran past him to relaxing more, following his lead, letting go of any tension and genuinely enjoying his time out. He had no intention of fighting to get ahead or trying to dominate the walk, and this did him the world of good socialising with another strong confident male. This has taken time and several sessions meeting Loki, but other than the odd bark or two Rufus was brilliant 🙂
🐶 RUFUS is a 3 year-old, medium sized boy. This bright, loyal dog is affectionate, loving, and wants nothing more than to bond with someone kind and consistent. But he’s also had a tough past. He likely lived a life of guarding and survival. His soul is soft, but his early experiences taught him to be alert and protect himself. He needs an experienced, adult-only home, ideally in the countryside or a quiet area, where he can settle without overstimulation and continue his journey of healing.

💔 Rescue Story
🐶 Rufus’ rescue story began in the most unusual and moving way: he jumped into a stranger’s open car and sat down like he’d found where he was meant to be. He was tired, thin, and clearly searching for someone to trust. That was the beginning of his journey to safety—but it’s not the end of his story. He still needs the right person to help him feel safe, loved, and understood for the rest of his life.
🐶 Previous Foster Assessment – Honest, Loving, Rufus is wonderful in the home—he’s house-trained, will happily take his time with food, definitely not a greedy boy! He does love his treats and quiet time as well though. He is affectionate, craves cuddles, and gets truly joyful when you return home.
⚠️ Rufus struggles with his reactivity when on a walk. We have been working with Rufus to help him through his anxiety and he’s gotten much calmer walking past cars and other people but will still bark at other dogs. This is something that with dedicated training and support he will also overcome in time 🙏🏻 He is best walked in quiet areas and would do beautifully in a rural, low-traffic environment where he isn’t constantly overwhelmed.
🐶 RUFUS is loving, smart, and gentle with those he trusts—and with time, trust can grow. Let’s help this beautiful boy find the peaceful corner of the world where he can truly belong.
