Description

Froddo is approximately 5 years and 9 months old and is a Medium Male weighing around 16KG. He is neutered, vaccinated and has no known health issues. Froddo was rescued in Bucharest Romania in September 2020, he spent 1 Month in shelter before moving to an adoption home. Unfortunately after 6 months his adopter made the decision to surrender him due to his unpredictable behaviours within the home which resulted in a bite towards his owner. He then moved over to our UK Kennels for a short period before moving to his current adoption home. Froddo has been with his adopters for almost 5 years now however they have made the unfortunate decision to surrender him due to a sudden decline in his behaviour within the last 6 months, they don't feel they can continue working with him for this reason. Froddo is a clever and engaging dog with a lot of personality. He forms strong bonds with the people he trusts and enjoys being close to them. At home he likes to sleep on the floor in the bedroom and settles well overnight. He travels calmly in the car, enjoys walks, and has good recall when off lead. On lead he generally walks well and does not pull excessively. He enjoys his routine and benefits from clear expectations and structure in the home. He particularly enjoys food and treats, especially chicken and other poultry or fish. He also enjoys pigs’ ears and smaller dental sticks. One of his favourite places is lying in front of a warm fireplace, and he loves a good scratch on the back of his neck where his collar sits. After a bath he likes to dry himself enthusiastically on the sofa and especially enjoys having his face dried first. During very windy weather he can become anxious and prefers to stay very close to his people for reassurance. Froddo is toilet trained and has generally coped well when left alone for short periods, usually up to around three hours. Until recently he had a comfortable routine where he stayed in a designated room when left alone. Over the last six months he has started showing some distress when confined to one room and has occasionally scratched or dug at doors, flooring and carpets when trying to get out. He is not typically destructive in other contexts and this behaviour appears to be related to frustration or anxiety when separated in a confined space. He is comfortable wearing a collar, harness and lead and has been partially muzzle trained for situations such as vet visits as part of responsible management. His owners have worked with a trainer in the past to help build his confidence and to support introductions to new people and dogs. Techniques that have helped include calm, slow introductions in neutral outdoor spaces before bringing visitors into the home, and using his strong food motivation to create positive associations. Froddo does best when introductions to new people happen slowly. Once he knows someone he is comfortable and relaxed around them, but he can be wary of strangers entering his home without an introduction. Meeting people outside first in a neutral area such as a park has worked well for him. On walks he is generally calm around people and older children provided they respect his space. He is used to seeing children between roughly eight and thirteen years old when out walking and is comfortable passing them. However he would not be suitable to live in a home with children or to travel in a car with them. Froddo has had experience with other dogs. He previously lived alongside an older German Shepherd without issues, although since that dog passed away he has become reactive when encountering German Shepherds on walks. He has also developed a relationship with a small to medium dachshund cross belonging to family members. Their relationship required careful introductions initially but they are now able to spend time together and even share weekends together. In general Froddo can walk calmly with other dogs and can pass them on walks provided they do not rush directly into his space. If another dog reacts toward him he may respond in kind. For this reason careful and controlled introductions are important. He does not like cats and would not be suitable for a home with them. There has been one confirmed bite incident. This occurred while returning home from a walk when a neighbour stepped outside their front door. Froddo was on a retractable lead and reached the neighbour before the handler could pull him back. He bit the neighbour on the calf and the bite broke the skin. The neighbour attended hospital as a precaution and was given antibiotics but did not require further treatment. Since then management and caution around triggers has been very important. Froddo can also be protective around certain resources. He does not guard treats and will allow his bowl to be picked up, but he prefers people not to stand too close to him while he is eating. He can also show guarding behaviour around food if it is left available and someone enters the room while he is not actively eating it. This has been managed successfully by offering meals for a short period and removing them if he chooses not to eat. The ideal home for Froddo would be a calm, adult-only household with no visiting children, no cats, and ideally no other dogs, although a very calm dog with slow and careful introductions might be possible with experienced handlers. He would do best with people who understand nervous or reactive dogs and who are prepared to maintain a consistent routine and continue positive training and management.
