Description

Hugo, formally known as Neo is a medium sized mixed breed dog, weighing approximately 12kg, with a Labrador-type appearance. He was originally adopted in February 2021 and is currently located in Plymouth. Hugo is neutered and microchipped, although his vaccinations have lapsed and will need to be restarted. He is not currently on any medication and is generally reported to be in good health. He was adopted with a large scar on his abdomen and is missing several toes, but these have not caused any ongoing health concerns. The only minor issue noted by his owner is a misshapen toenail that needs to be kept trimmed short. Hugo was rescued in Contanta Romania, he moved to a foster home in June 2020 where he lived for 2 weeks. They said the following: Neo is a happy boy with a gentle soul who loves to play. He is good around people and is an affectionate dog who needs a family who can spend time giving him a fuss. He is good with them but can sometimes chase cats. Neo moved to his current adoption home in June 2020 and has lived with them for almost 6 years. Unfortunately they have made the decision to surrender him. The reason for rehoming Hugo is due to significant changes in the owner’s living situation and work commitments. New jobs now require extended hours and frequent travel, meaning the owner is no longer able to provide the time, structure, and attention that Hugo needs. Hugo is described as a friendly and affectionate dog who enjoys human company and attention. He can become very excited when greeting visitors and tends to jump up when people arrive, although he usually calms down fairly quickly once he has greeted them. He enjoys close contact with his people and often behaves in a playful, puppy-like way, including attempting to sit on laps and seeking out tummy rubs. Hugo has lived with children aged between approximately five and ten years old and has generally been fine around them. However, he is energetic and unaware of his size and can easily knock into people when excited. Because of this, and his tendency to jump up and mouth when overexcited, he would be better suited to a home with children 8+ rather than very young ones however smaller children can be considered in the right home. Hugo currently lives with an elderly resident dog. The two dogs tolerate each other but do not have a particularly close relationship. Hugo can be reactive toward other dogs, especially when on lead. He may lunge and bark at unfamiliar dogs unless introductions are carried out properly. For this reason he is usually walked on a short lead, although a long line is sometimes used in open fields. His recall is considered unreliable and he is not currently allowed off lead. While he could potentially live with another dog following careful introductions, his owner feels he may benefit from being the only dog in a home where he can receive more individual attention and consistent guidance. Hugo has also previously been around cats and has been reported to be fine with them. On walks Hugo can initially pull strongly on the lead, particularly while he is burning off excess energy. Once he has settled, he walks more calmly. Due to this pulling behaviour the owner does not allow children to walk him. He is interested in people and may approach them for a sniff but generally remains friendly. Hugo has occasionally growled or reacted toward people passing by the front window of the house, but this behaviour is reported to be rare and limited to those situations. He has also shown some mild resource guarding around toys, although this has not been described as severe. Hugo is fully toilet trained and crate trained. As he has grown older he now sleeps in a small utility room overnight alongside the resident dog. He is last let outside at around 10pm and usually settles until the household wakes around 5am. He can be left alone during the working day and has previously been left for up to eight hours without issues. However, if he becomes bored and does not have toys or enrichment he may become destructive. Hugo travels well in the car, particularly if he has not eaten beforehand. He enjoys long and energetic walks and thrives on physical activity and engagement with his owner. He does not enjoy bath time and will often hide when he realises he is about to be bathed. Hugo would likely do best in an active home where he receives regular exercise, structure, and continued training. A home with experience handling energetic dogs and the ability to manage his lead reactivity would be beneficial. He is affectionate, playful, and people-focused, and with the right environment and consistent guidance he has the potential to be a very rewarding companion.
