I’m Kanella, a 6‑year‑old Kokoni girl, curently in a foster home in West Midlands. Not so long ago… life was very different for me.
Back in October, I was rescued with 26 other dogs from a place no animal should ever be. It was loud, scary, and full of fear. We were all misunderstood and mishandled… and I learned early on that humans could be something to survive, not something to trust.
When I arrived, I was completely shut down. I didn’t know how to lift my head, how to wag my tail, or how to believe that hands could be kind. I froze whenever someone looked my way. I had learned to disappear.
But then… little by little… something changed.
People started speaking softly. Moving gently. Waiting patiently. They never rushed me. They never forced me. They let me decide when I was ready.
And slowly, I began to peek out from inside my shell.
Today, I can be gently stroked, and that is huge progress for a girl like me. I’m still nervous — especially around my neck, because of the way we were dragged and caught in the past — but I’m learning. I even walk on a lead now, wearing a safe, comfortable harness. My tail stays low, but my courage gets a little bigger each day. And that matters.
I like other dogs… actually, I need them.
They show me how to be brave, how to explore, how to relax. I blossom most when I have a gentle, confident dog next to me who can show me that the world isn’t so scary after all.
What I dream of is a quiet, understanding home — a place where someone won’t expect too much, too soon. Someone who will let me grow at my own pace. Someone who will celebrate the tiny victories that feel huge to me. Someone who will whisper to me that I am safe… and finally mean it.
Maybe that someone is you.
If you have a calm home, a kind heart, and a sweet resident dog who wouldn’t mind showing me the way, I promise I will try my very best. I may take time, but one day, I hope to look at you with soft eyes and know that you’re mine… and I’m yours.
I’m ready to learn what love feels like.
I’m ready to know that life can be gentle.
I’m ready to finally belong.
