Description
Reggie is a lovely, house trained 10 month old Cockapoo (F2) with lots of potential. He is playful, loves going on walks and playing in the garden with his toys. Unfortunately, Reggie suffers from anxiety which can show itself as aggressive guarding in the following ways:
Growling and 'hiding' under tables/beds/chairs
Running out at people, including children, who walk past the guarded space
Snapping, but not biting as yet
Jumping up at people in an aggressive manner
Reggie has never bitten us, but with 2 young children in the house, we are not in a position to keep Reggie in our home and risk escalating behaviour.
We have worked closely with a vet behaviourist who has suggested Reggie would be happier in a quiet home with no children. The vet has also prescribed Reggie with Gabapentin and Fluoxetine to help with his anxiety.
We are being transparent and honest and must ensure that anyone interested in adopting Reggie understands the following:
Reggie can be aggressive when in an anxious or nervous state (caused by noise or a busy space)
Reggie needs a home with no children under the age of 16 and any young people aged 16+ in the home must be dog savvy
Reggie needs a quiet home with a garden, with ideally a single person or a couple
Reggie needs an owner/s who can commit time to train Reggie and support his behavioural needs
This is a very emotional process for us as a family as we love Reggie and wish we could keep him, but cannot risk harm to our children. Any interested parties must understand that we are not in a position to accept Reggie back if you decide you are unable to manage his aggression - hence being totally honest. Please only get in touch if you have fully read and understood Reggie's behaviour, and feel you are able to support Reggie.
Reggie is a lovely dog and we have shared happy times as a family - he loves to meet other dogs and people, will often roll on his back for a tummy tickle and loves to play in the garden with his toys, when Reggie is in this happy state, he doesn't show aggression or guard, it is just when he's nervous or anxious.
We feel that with the right owner/s and in a quieter home, Reggie will thrive and be the lovely, playful dog we know he is
