Description
Irish is a small, five-year-old female weighing around 10kg. She is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped, and has no known health issues.
Irish was rescued from the streets of Curtea de Argeș in January 2024 after being found with her two siblings. Sadly, she was the only one to survive. She was described as shy but friendly, playful and gentle, and did well with cats.
After two months in shelter, Irish moved into foster care in March 2024. In May 2024 her foster made the decision to surrender her due to reactivity towards people and dogs, jumping up onto the kitchen table and toileting indoors. She was then moved to our UK Safe Haven kennels.
Since arriving, Irish has continued to show reactivity towards people and dogs but is improving with consistent handling. She can bark, growl and lunge if dogs, cats or people come too close, and she can be vocal on walks when excited or overwhelmed. She is nervous of seeing new people and may growl when uncomfortable, but once she gets to know you she loves fuss and cuddles. In her previous home she bit a visiting dog, causing a superficial puncture wound that did not require medical treatment, so she will need to be the only dog in the home.
Irish met cats while in Romania and was comfortable with them; however, since arriving in the UK she has shown reactivity to cats and therefore will need a cat-free home. She shows no guarding behaviour around food and will allow her carers to touch or move her bowl while eating. She is very food-motivated and responds well to positive reinforcement.
Irish has made good progress with her muzzle training and now happily puts her nose into the muzzle for treats. She accepts a collar, harness and lead and enjoys her walks. She can pull at first due to excitement and is very reactive if dogs approach too closely, barking, growling or lunging towards them, but she is learning to stay calm and settle more quickly with gentle encouragement. She travels quietly in the car but can be travel sick.
Irish cannot live with other dogs, cats or children. She will need an adult-only home (18+), ideally with one person who can provide consistency and reassurance. She will need to meet prospective adopters at the kennels so introductions can be carried out gradually.
Once she knows you, Irish is a real sweetheart — affectionate, playful and full of personality. She enjoys spending time in the paddock playing with toys and taking part in enrichment sessions.
