Description
We are looking for a new home for our beautiful 1-year-old German Shepherd due to a change in our family circumstances. This is an incredibly difficult decision, and our priority is finding the right home where she can receive the time, attention, and support she needs.
We are her second home and took her on around 6 months ago. When we got her, we genuinely believed we had the time, lifestyle, and experience to give her everything she needed based on how she was described to us. However, once she settled into our home, it became clear that she had additional behavioural challenges that we were not expecting. Since then, our lifestyle has also changed significantly, making it even harder for us to meet her needs.
She is a loyal, loving dog who is devoted to her family. She is fantastic with children, lives happily alongside cats, and is incredibly affectionate with the people she knows and trusts.
She has excellent recall when walking in quiet areas and walks beautifully on a lead when there are no distractions. However, when she sees other dogs or people, she becomes highly excited, very vocal, and pulls extremely hard on the lead. Due to her strength, she has nearly pulled us over on numerous occasions.
She also suffers from severe separation anxiety. She can be left for short periods, but she can become distressed when left alone and often becomes overly excited when her family returns home.
Over the last 6 months, we have dedicated a great deal of time to training and have tried multiple techniques and approaches to help improve both her lead reactivity and anxiety. Unfortunately, despite our efforts, we have not achieved the progress needed.
We now have a 9-month-old baby, and because of the risk of being pulled over while walking her, we no longer feel it is safe to take her out as often as she needs. Combined with changes to our work schedules and living in a busy area with frequent triggers, we are no longer able to provide the lifestyle and consistency she deserves.
As a result of the difficulties taking her out regularly, her vaccinations and microchip details will need updating by her new owner.
We believe she would be best suited to an experienced owner, ideally someone familiar with German Shepherds or reactive dogs, who has plenty of time to dedicate to her and lives in a quieter environment. A home where someone is around for most of the day would be ideal. With the right person, patience, and continued training, we believe she has the potential to thrive.
This decision has not been made lightly. We care about her deeply and simply want what is best for her. We are committed to finding a loving, understanding, and permanent home where she can get the attention and support she needs.
Please get in touch if you feel you can offer her the home she deserves.
