Description
Clove is a small-to-medium c.2yr old female who is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. She has recently been diagnosed as deaf and will need a home experienced with deaf dogs and committed to continuing her training and communication work.
Clove was rescued from Adjud, Romania, in November 2024 and travelled shortly afterwards to our UK Safe Haven kennels in Nantwich. She was described as sweet and affectionate with staff and volunteers, loving fuss and attention. At the kennels she could be reactive to other dogs in the paddocks and had several fights with her female sibling, although she generally got on with her dad Barney. She also guarded the bed from other dogs. Clove was vocal and lively but gentle with people and quickly became a favourite among volunteers.
In February 2025 Clove moved to an adoption home. After a month the family decided to return her, feeling unable to manage her deafness and associated anxiety. They reported that Clove had nipped a behaviourist (no skin broken) and had snapped at her owner and visitors on several occasions when startled or frightened. They described her as affectionate, playful and loving once settled, enjoying cuddles, belly rubs and playtime, but easily spooked by sudden movement or strangers.
Clove returned to kennels and later moved to a foster home in May 2025. Her foster family said she was affectionate and loved her walks, rolling in the grass and using her snuffle mats. However, she reacted to visitors entering the home, barking, lunging and snapping through fear. After a week they felt unable to manage this and returned her to the kennels.
Since coming back, Clove has continued to show both her affectionate and challenging sides. She enjoys walks and has done well on outings with volunteers, greeting people and dogs calmly in neutral environments and walking nicely on a lead. However, she can be unpredictable around other dogs, particularly in the home. During a recent day out she had started a fight with the resident dog while guarding the area she was laying in, however, there had been no incidents prior to this and they had met several times with no issues and played nicely. We believe she has very strong guarding tendencies and if she were to live with another dog there would need to be firm boundaries put in place to prevent any incidents. She has been known to guard beds and food.
Clove accepts a collar, harness and lead and generally walks well, though she can pull or weave between feet when excited. She responds well to food as distraction and will mostly ignore triggers when redirected. She remains nervous of sudden movement and can flinch if hands move quickly near her head.
Clove cannot live with cats and has not lived with young children. Due to her anxiety and guarding tendencies she requires a calm, adult-only home (18+) with few visitors. She will need slow introductions to new people and a consistent, patient owner who can give her space to decompress.
Clove travels well in the car and settles once underway. She is toilet-trained and actively uses her crate in her kennel. She can be left for up to four hours without issue and sleeps soundly overnight.
Clove is currently being muzzle-trained and will need to meet any prospective adopters at the kennels so that introductions can be carried out gradually.
Clove is a bright, affectionate young dog who adores her trusted people but struggles when overwhelmed. With structure, patience and an experienced home that understands her deafness and need for calm handling, Clove will continue to build confidence and feel secure.
