We are reluctantly looking to rehome our rescued Green-winged Macaw due to us not having the experience required to tame and rehabilitate a fear-aggressive rescue bird.
The bird is located in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey.
We do not know the sex. The bird has no leg ring and was originally found flying wild in the New Forest. The person we rescued it from made attempts to locate the original owner but nobody came forward. The bird has previously been scanned for a microchip, but we cannot guarantee its history.
Since coming to us, the bird's physical condition has improved considerably. New feathers are growing back across its chest where it was previously bare. It is fully flighted, active, eats extremely well and talks.
The bird will take food very gently from your hand and sometimes appears to want interaction and affection. However, it is fear aggressive and an empty hand approaching it can result in a serious bite. It has never stepped up or allowed us to handle or stroke it.
We have tried positive reinforcement and clicker training and have had moments where we believed we'd made a breakthrough, but unfortunately the unpredictable biting has continued.
We previously owned a tame Green-winged Macaw and have realised that what we want is a tame companion bird. We simply don't have the specialist experience required to rehabilitate this particular rescue bird.
This bird therefore needs an experienced large-parrot/macaw owner who fully understands what they are taking on. It may ultimately be more suited to an aviary or a home where physical handling isn't expected.
The bird currently has a very large cage approximately 2m long × 2m high × 1m deep. Any potential new owner will need to provide evidence that they already have, or will provide, suitably large accommodation.
We were previously let down by someone who agreed to take the bird, so please only contact us if you are genuinely interested and have suitable experience.
