🏠 Housing
- Minimum space: 60 × 40 × 30 cm for 1 pair; larger for groups
- Best ratio: 1 male : 2–3 females; never house 2+ males together—they fight
- Flooring: Deep substrate: sand, peat, soil, or soft wood shavings; avoid wire mesh floors
- Cover: Add low plants, hay, half-pots, or shelters—they hide constantly
- Roof: Solid or soft netting; no high ceilings—prevent impact injury
- Temp: 18–24°C (65–75°F); avoid drafts & <10°C (50°F) in winter
- Light: 12–14 hours light; 10–12 hours dark cycle
🥗 Diet
- Base: Small seed mix, exotic finch mix, or 20% protein gamebird crumbs
- Supplements:
- Daily: Fresh greens (lettuce, dandelion, kale, clover)
- 2–3x/week: Live food—mealworms, crickets, fruit flies
- Grit & calcium (oyster shell) for digestion & egg-laying
- Water: Shallow dish—no deep bowls; chicks can drown
🧹 Maintenance
- Dust bath: Essential—sand + diatomaceous earth/wood ash daily; controls mites
- Cleaning: Spot-clean daily; full change every 1–2 weeks
- Health signs: Active, bright eyes, smooth plumage; watch for mites, diarrhea, lethargy
🥚 Breeding
- Age: Mature at 8–12 weeks
- Clutch: 5–12 creamy/olive eggs, speckled
- Incubation: 16–18 days; female sits, male guards
- Chicks: Tiny—use fine mesh; feed starter crumbs + small insects; warm brooder 32°C → 24°C gradually
