Description
Two 8-year-old female Cocker-Jack (cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Jack Russell Terrier) dogs in need of a loving home. Unfortunately, we are moving overseas and although it makes us very sad, we cannot take them with us. We will miss them very much (and vice versa), but we are hoping we can find them the perfect, forever home. They are very lively, loyal, and affectionate. They absolutely must go together as they are inseparable, having lived their whole lives together with not a day apart. They are not good with cats and need more socializing with other dogs. They enjoy perfect health, never needing to visit the vet. They have not been vaccinated since they were puppies and do not have fleas. They are not spayed and have not been bred. They are house-trained. As we want to spend as much time with them as possible, they are not available to take home until around July 10-14, although enquiries are welcome. If you are seriously interested, visits should be arranged now to assess compatibility. We are asking an adoption fee of £300 to ensure that Joy and Shadow go to a loving and caring home for the rest of their lives with committed owners.
A little about this pair of dogs:
Joy: The smaller of the pair, Joy is "the cute one", rarely seen without a wagging tail. A very happy dog, she loves to cuddle and play fetch, and is the more vocal of the two. She is feisty and takes longer to adjust to new things, but her bark is much worse than her bite! She has a white stripe on her neck.
Shadow: Shadow is easy-going, quieter, and more mellow. Living up to her name, she follows people around and gets underfoot. She is quicker to make friends with new people and animals. Being athletic with long, strong legs, she loves running and jumping and will chase and kill wild birds. Although Joy makes a lot of noise, when it comes down to it, Shadow is the boss (although at times she still follows Joy's less-than-perfect example). She has a white star on her chest.
They both enjoy a good long walk as they are full of energy, (even at 8 years old, we still have people ask if they are puppies!) but they also spend a lot of time indoors. If the sun is out, they will enjoy lying in it for hours, or by the fire in winter. They are on an all-natural diet which includes raw meat and bones, which is why they are in excellent health with such shiny coats. They are good with grooming and being handled (although baths are not their favorite), besides having their nails trimmed, unfortunately. They have a high prey drive and will go after rats (although annihilation of the population is not guaranteed ;), rabbits, and other small animals, but have been trained not to mess with domestic poultry. They (especially Shadow) also catch flies and spiders in the house! Although they come from a large family, they need close supervision with young children, but love quiet or older children and young people. They like older people too, but can pull very hard on the lead at times. They are well-behaved but have their quirks as all dogs do and should have consistent handling/training. They know basic commands and have a fairly good recall (although this will probably need work with a new owner).
Their daddy was a chocolate working Cocker Spaniel and their mother was a short-haired Jack Russel. The resulting breed is one of high energy, high prey drive, and intense loyalty and affection to the owners. As a small/mixed breed with a wonderful, healthy start and a strong constitution, we are guessing they have at least 4-8 years left to live.
The ideal home for Shadow and Joy would be someone who lives in the country and can give them lots of attention, especially at first when they are adjusting. (We are home all day almost every day and they have not been separated from us at all. Nobody has even pet-sit them before, so this will be a big change for them, especially as they are very loyal dogs.) Also someone who will be willing to work with them to gain their trust and love (it may take some time to switch their 8-year loyalty to another owner!) Although they need work with other dogs, there is still a possibility of them living with another dog(s) if the owner is willing to help them work through the learning curve. (They are not aggressive, but sometimes temperamental and frightened of other dogs, resulting in barking, etc.) Ideally, someone who lives close to the area so that visits aren't as hard to arrange and travel time will not be as traumatic for the dogs. If you feel that you could provide such a home for them, please get in touch.
They will come with basic supplies, such as bedding, crate, extra food, etc.
