Description
Winnie is a 6-year-old, 15.2hh Thoroughbred mare. She has been out of work for around 7 months and turned away in the field for the last 4 months.
She is looking for a companion or project home for somebody experienced.
She is currently moving inconsistently behind. She is not hopping lame or distressed, but she is not consistently fully sound and recently failed a vetting due to this. Some days she appears completely sound, and other days she’s just not quite right. Because of this, she is being sold from the field as a companion or experienced project only and is priced accordingly at £500.
Temperament-wise, she is a typical intelligent Thoroughbred. She can be sensitive and does best with a calm, confident handler and a consistent routine. She thrives with plenty of turnout and is happiest living out or with regular turnout. She would suit a quieter, knowledgeable home rather than a busy environment.
She is currently living out full time but still comes in for the occasional feed, feet picked out and a quick flick over, so she hasn’t just been left untouched in a field.
She can be mareish in the stable and pull faces, however if you can read body language and know when to give her space, she isn’t a problem.
She has become a little wary of vets following treatment for her leg infection, which involved frequent sedation over a prolonged period. As a result, she can be slightly nervous initially, but with a calm approach and a few treats for distraction she settles quickly.
She is good to catch and will often come to call. She is good with mares and geldings and generally prefers to stay out of any field drama. She is good for the farrier and dentist, loads first time with a lunge line around her bum (her little quirk), travels well, and has no known stable vices.
Please don’t expect immaculate manners. She has been out of work for 7 months and turned away for 4, so she’s understandably a little rusty rather than polished. She’s a young Thoroughbred who benefits from consistency, routine and regular handling.
She is barefoot, passported, microchipped, and up to date with vaccinations, dentist, farrier and worming.
She is not currently on any medication and there are no ongoing veterinary treatment plans or management programmes in place.
Known history:
* Mild tendon strain around a year ago, fully rehabbed, rescanned and signed off by the vet before returning to work.
* Hind leg infection following a cut, treated and resolved, although there is still some residual thickening. The leg can fill slightly if stabled for prolonged periods, but she is happiest living out or with regular turnout.
* Treated for ulcers and rescoped clear in January.
* A few small sarcoids which are not currently causing any issues.
I want to be completely upfront about her. If you’re looking for a horse to ride immediately, something for a novice or child, or a horse you’d expect to pass a vetting, Winnie is unlikely to be suitable.
She is only 6 years old and is by no means a write-off, but she needs someone experienced, realistic, and willing to take her as she is rather than expecting a quick fix.
If you’re unsure whether she’s suitable for you, she probably isn’t.
If you’re looking for a companion or an experienced project and are happy to make your own assessment, you’re very welcome to come and view her.
I am happy to answer questions and provide further information, photos and videos if you are genuinely interested
