Description

Looking for the most perfect home due to time constraints and wanting to spend more time as a young family. 18.2hh+ (honestly haven’t measured him), 16 year old, bay gelding. Please read full ad before messaging as we will only sell him to someone who can give him more than we can. He would be suited to someone who can give him all round turnout and possibly with facilities to keep him in work in the winter months. Due to us only having a small amount of land we don’t have anywhere to ride other than the roads in the winter which means he has just had 4-5 months off work, but can normally be brought back into routine and back to normal within a couple of weeks. He can be a very willing, steady horse. However, when he hasn’t been kept in regular work and has had some turnout, he is definitely more on edge and more easily wound up. He doesn’t do anything nasty, but can be more on his toes and slightly unsure. Sometimes this can result in him being stubborn going past something, but he can soon be pushed forward with a bit of firmness without much question. For this reason, he is not suited to a novice. He is a good hacker—he will hack alone or in company, though better in company, especially if he hasn’t been out in a while, is at a new place, or there is a lot going on. He will happily go in front or behind. When hacking, he is generally good with traffic and not spooky. If he hasn’t been out in a while, he may be concerned about large rattling vehicles, but giving plenty of space solves this. He will happily go for a canter in open space and doesn’t lose his mind over it. He is good to school, sure-footed and steady. He does what is asked of him without question. With a novice rider, he may take advantage by being a bit lazy and not moving forward, but he will soon respond once told to get on. He listens well to voice commands and often changes pace from voice alone. If he hasn’t been ridden in a while, he will still school nicely but may be a little on edge and give a few head shakes, which can be ridden through; this disappears with regular schooling. He doesn’t mind how tall his rider is, so any height is fine, although due to his size, a taller person is recommended for tacking up. On the ground, he is well-mannered and never tries to use his size against you. He leads well just in a headcollar and is very food-oriented, so he will do almost anything for a treat. He has had the last 4–5 months off work, so he is being sold from the field, ready for someone to restart him. He should come back into work very quickly once settled into a new home. He is in good health with good teeth. He has mild stringhalt (idiopathic) in his far hind leg. The farrier needs to be a little more patient with this leg, but it improves greatly and is almost non-existent with regular movement. A suitable home is very important for him—ideally a forever home where he won’t be passed on
