Description
Popescu is a 9 year old large male dog weighing approximately 30kg. He is neutered and up to date with his vaccinations. He does not have any diagnosed medical conditions. He receives daily glucosamine supplements to support joint mobility, which he tolerates well.
Popescu was rescued in Breasta Romania in August 2020. The team said the following:
He is a wonderful chap who loves a good fuss and has been friendly with everyone he has met including children. He gets on well with other dogs.
Popescu moved to our UK Kennels in February 2021 before moving to his current adoption home and few days later. He has been with his family for 5 years however due to a recent decline in behaviour they have made the decision to surrender him. It is felt his decline in Behaviour is due to the stress of the recent baby within the home who is now becoming more active and unpredictable for him.
When Popescu was surrendered we arranged a face to face assessment with one of our volunteers, they said the following:
Popescu is a calm, friendly, and gentle older dog who was an absolute pleasure to assess. In his home environment, he was relaxed and settled, choosing to rest on his bed and approaching the assessor politely when invited. He may bark at knocking but remains relaxed and is good with visitors of all genders. Popescu willingly approached, accepted pets, and stayed calm and affectionate throughout, without becoming overexcited. No behavioral issues were observed during the assessment. He showed mild interest in larger dogs but was easily redirected, remaining polite, gentle, and non-pushy. On walks, Popescu was outstanding—walking calmly on lead with only gentle pulling when sniffing, demonstrating excellent recall, and responding promptly to guidance. He remained calm and relaxed, showing mild interest only in large dogs, and was unbothered by people, children, cats, or other dogs. No negative behaviors were noted during the walk. Popescu is gentle when taking treats, with no food guarding observed. Overall, he is affectionate, easy to handle, and would be best suited to a calm adult-only home or one with older, dog-savvy children. While bite incidents have occurred, these appear linked to environmental factors and could likely have been avoided with different management. With appropriate handling, Popescu would make a wonderful companion and deserves a calm, loving home where he can enjoy a comfortable and well-earned retirement.
Popescu is a calm, intelligent, and generally easy-to-live-with dog who has many positive qualities. He is well settled in the home, toilet trained, crate trained, and able to relax quietly either in his open crate or on a nearby bed. He sleeps well overnight, travels very comfortably in the car, and can be left alone for several hours without any signs of separation anxiety or destructive behaviour. He is obedient, responsive to training, and has an excellent recall, particularly when using a whistle. Although he has not attended formal training classes, he has been trained consistently by his guardian and responds well to clear cues and routine.
Popescu enjoys regular exercise and is currently walked twice daily, with a longer morning walk and a shorter afternoon walk. He walks well on lead, with only mild pulling when engaged in sniffing, and is generally relaxed and unbothered by people he encounters while out. He is confident and adaptable in new environments and has travelled extensively with his owner, staying in a variety of settings including hotels, family homes, tents, and kennels, where he has consistently been described as very well behaved.
He is typically social with other dogs, particularly when off lead, where he will greet briefly and then move on. On lead, he can react to some very large or strong dogs such as huskies or German shepherd–type dogs, showing behaviours such as growling or barking, but he is responsive to redirection and reassurance, especially when food is used. He has previously shared space successfully with family and friends’ dogs and could live with another dog following a careful introduction, ideally one that is smaller or less dominant. He is generally uninterested in cats and has not shown any chase behaviour, so could live with cats following sensible introductions.
Popescu is affectionate in a calm, understated way and enjoys gentle contact such as relaxed petting and belly rubs with people he knows. He will bark when someone knocks at the door and may show mild caution toward tall or loud men, but he settles quickly and is tolerant of visitors, approaching them to sniff and assess. He is comfortable with general handling and grooming, although he dislikes nail clipping; this is manageable as his remaining nails are naturally worn down through exercise.
Popescu’s main behavioural challenge is resource guarding, primarily around food and food-related items. This behaviour has been present for some time and was previously manageable within the household. Following the arrival of a baby and particularly once the baby began eating solid food, Popescu’s guarding behaviours in shared spaces increased, especially around dropped food or items associated with meals. In these situations, he may growl and has, on occasion, snapped or bitten when items were removed or when people reached toward the floor. Over a five-year period, he has bitten his owner on three occasions, all occurring in specific contexts involving either high-value items or uncomfortable handling. These incidents have resulted in minor injuries requiring medical treatment.
The family has worked with a behaviourist and implemented management strategies such as feeding separately, using physical barriers during mealtimes, and limiting access to high-risk areas. Despite these efforts, the presence of a young baby, and the increasing risk as the child becomes mobile, has made the situation unsafe and unsustainable in the current home.
