Description

Teddy is a medium sized mixed breed male, born approximately January 2020 and weighing around 20kg. He is microchipped but not neutered, following veterinary advice due to his nervous temperament. Teddy is not currently up to date with his vaccinations. He has no ongoing medical conditions and is not on any regular medication. During his time with his current family he visited the vet once for an injured paw and required muzzling due to his fear and aggression. The veterinary practice declined further appointments because of this behaviour. He was also given a short trial of calming medication, however this did not have any noticeable effect. Teddy was rescued as a puppy from a public shelter in Bragadiru, Romania in May 2020 alongside his mum and siblings. He travelled to the UK shortly afterwards and was adopted into his current home in June 2020. After five years, his family have made the very difficult decision to surrender him due to his long-standing nervous and reactive behaviour which can result in him biting when he feels overwhelmed or frightened. Over the years Teddy has bitten several members of the household on multiple occasions, and a recent incident where the bite was more severe has led the family to feel they can no longer safely manage him in the home. As a result, the children in the household are now fearful of him. Teddy currently lives as the only dog in the home. He can be nervous around other dogs and may display fear-based reactivity when on the lead, including barking, growling, lunging and air snapping. When off lead in calm, quiet environments he can relax more and may play with other dogs if they are calm and respectful, but due to his anxiety and unpredictability he will need to be the only dog in his new home. Teddy has lived with two children for the past five years who were aged 3 and 8 when he arrived and are now 8 and 13. Although he gradually became used to them, he has still nipped both children on a number of occasions when feeling anxious or overwhelmed. He is not comfortable around unfamiliar children and can react defensively, therefore he will require an adult only home. When Teddy first arrived in the home he lived with a cat but showed reactive behaviour towards it, frequently growling and attempting to chase. Because of this he cannot live with cats or small animals. Teddy finds visitors to the home extremely difficult. When someone enters the house he will snarl, growl, bark and lunge towards them, showing defensive behaviour that requires careful management. Teddy accepts a collar and lead. He can be nervous while on lead and will often pull, preferring to stop frequently to sniff his surroundings. He can be aggressively reactive towards other dogs when restrained on the lead. He will usually ignore people if they ignore him, but if someone approaches or attempts to speak to him he may react. Teddy is a very sensitive and anxious dog and can be startled by everyday stimuli such as bins, gates, grates, loud vehicles, walking sticks or objects that move or flap such as signs and banners. When frightened he may cower or attempt to run away. In quieter environments Teddy really enjoys his walks and particularly loves playing fetch with his ball. His recall is very good when off lead in safe, quiet locations and he enjoys running freely before returning happily when called and allowing his lead to be put back on. However, due to the risk of him bolting if startled, he is only allowed off lead in areas away from people and other dogs. Teddy is muzzle trained and is comfortable wearing a muzzle on walks when required. Teddy has never shown any resource guarding behaviour. He is fully toilet trained and will indicate when he needs to go outside. He is not currently crate trained, although he was when he was younger. He has never been destructive in the home and settles well when left alone. His owners report that he often appears to enjoy the quiet time as it allows him to relax. On rare occasions he has been left for up to six hours without any issues. Teddy also settles well overnight with a consistent bedtime routine and usually sleeps quietly in the living room until morning. Teddy travels very well in the car and is always excited to get in. He does not suffer from travel sickness and is happy sitting in the boot watching the world go by. His family describe Teddy as a very sweet and affectionate boy once he trusts you. He enjoys cuddles, treats and playing with his ball. However, he remains an extremely nervous and anxious dog and when he feels scared his instinct is to react quickly, which can include biting. His family have spent many years learning his triggers and managing his environment carefully, but he can still react when faced with something unexpected. In many other ways Teddy is an easy dog to live with. He can be left alone without difficulty, he is reliably house trained and has never shown destructive behaviour or separation anxiety. He currently eats a raw diet along with natural treats and does well on this. Although he has several toys he mainly enjoys his ball, particularly during games of fetch on walks. Training can sometimes be challenging because when Teddy is feeling nervous he will often refuse food rewards, especially when outside. Despite this he is an intelligent dog who learns quickly when he feels safe and relaxed. Teddy will need a calm, experienced, adult only home with someone who understands nervous and reactive dogs and is willing to provide the patience, structure and management he needs in order to help him feel more secure and improve his quality of life.
