For the last couple of weeks we deliberately stopped actively promoting Kai and Gerda because a lovely family seemed very interested in adopting them. They visited several times, had a few meet-and-greets and yesterday came for what was supposed to be the final visit before taking them home.
Sadly... it wasn't meant to be.
During their walk without foster, Kai saw another dog and reacted by barking, growling and lunging.
For us, working with dozens of rescue dogs every month, this wasn't a surprise or something we found alarming.
Kai has shown time and time again that he is a friendly dog with both people and dogs. This wasn't aggression. It was emotion—a dog feeling insecure, restricted in own choice by a lead with people he didn't yet know or trust, suddenly faced with a situation he didn't know how to handle.
Behaviour like this is very common in rescue dogs and, with trust, routine and the security of a settled home, is something we would expect to improve significantly within a relatively short time, just a few weeks (or can be avoided at all choosing the right distance or U-turn techniques).
The family were looking for confident, outgoing social butterflies who would happily greet everyone and everything from day one (like Kai and Gerda actually did when first meet them being not restricted by lead). Kai simply wasn't the right match for them, and that's okay. Finding the right match matters for both the family and the dog.
💔 And now Kai and Gerda are running out of time.
Their wonderful foster family is going on holiday next week, which means we have only a few days to find this beautiful pair another foster or foster-to-adopt home.
Please don't let one emotional moment define these amazing dogs.
🐾 Meet Kai & Gerda
Kai and Gerda are a bonded brother and sister, just 2 years old. They have already survived more than most dogs ever should, yet somehow they never lost their gentle, loving hearts.
They do everything together... exploring, playing, relaxing, sleeping and quietly making every day brighter simply by being themselves.
And one more thing... they are smaller than they look in photos! 🤭
💙 Kai weighs just 14 kg.
❤️ Gerda weighs only 11 kg.

💔 Rescue Story
Kai and Gerda were abandoned together in Western Ukraine. Originally there were three young dogs, but heartbreakingly only these two survived. Since then, they have never left each other's side.
They have faced every challenge together and continue to give each other comfort, confidence and companionship every single day.
🐾 More About Them
They arrived in UK two months ago and since then lived at our wonderful foster. Every week they continue to prove what wonderfully easy dogs they are.
They have settled beautifully into foster, are fully house-trained, love their walks, enjoy exploring, adore spending time in the garden and then happily curl up together afterwards for a nap.
They travel well, walk nicely on lead and have lovely manners around the home. Their foster describes them as an absolute pleasure to live with.
They are affectionate without being demanding, playful without being over-the-top, and active outdoors while calm and relaxed indoors.
Watching them together is genuinely special. They don't simply live alongside each other—they share an incredible bond that has helped them through everything life has thrown at them.
🏡 Ideal Home
Kai and Gerda are looking for one loving family willing to keep them together. A secure garden, peaceful walks, cosy evenings and people who understand that every rescue dog deserves a little time to settle would suit them perfectly.
They don't need perfection. They simply need someone willing to see beyond one emotional reaction to insecurity and recognise the two wonderful dogs standing in front of them.

🩺 Health Information
Both are fully healthy, neutered/spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. Kai is missing one eye, which the vet now believes is a congenital condition rather than the result of an old injury. It does not affect his quality of life in any way. All dogs are C.Brucella tested before travel (approved laboratory certificate provided).
