Description

Star is a 9 year old medium male dog from Romania. He is chipped, vaccinated and neutered. Star came over to the UK kennels in November 2023. He was adopted in February 2024 but was surrendered just a few weeks after moving to his adoptive home. He was surrendered for biting the visiting male partner. The man did need minor medical attention. This caused the adopter to lose trust in Star around the children. He was then returned to the kennels. Star moved to another adoptive home just 6 months later but was surrendered after 10 days. While Star was fearful of men and did react on walk the owner panicked as she had a visiting male partner and was scared about his reactivity. She returned Star to the kennels without following the surrender process or contacting her admin. Star then moved to our Cheshire kennels. They said the following: Star goes out with most female volunteers and walks well on the lead. He has built up his confidence with one our our male volunteers and can go on walks with him. Star goes on group walks with other dogs and is not reactive however, he will snap if a dog gets too close. Star is very good at warning when he is uncomfortable and not happy with the situation. Star will usually go still before hand with his tail down and grumble. Star walks lovely on the lead and is always complimented by volunteers on how well he walks. Star is a very friendly and affectionate boy. Star is loved by all volunteers and is always happy to go out for walks and receive fusses. Star has not shown signs of food guarding. Star has not shown signs of separation anxiety but he does destroy his bedding around meal times. This is felt it is down to being impatient more than anything. Star is mostly clean in his kennel but it should be expected that he will need toilet training when moving into a home. Star moved to his current foster home with one of the regular volunteers at OSH that walked him. Unfortunately they have had to make the decision to surrender Star after 2 months because of his reactivity to visitors in the home. They said the following: Star can be territorial in the home which will cause him to bark, snarl and lunge at visitors. He will settle if left alone behind a stairgate and will ignore the visitors. He does calm down more if introduced outside however he will still be reactive once inside as he finds this very overwhelming. Star accepts a collar, harness and lead, he has also started muzzle training. He walks very well on the lead and mainly ignores other dogs and people. He can sometimes want to sniff and say hello however other times he can be reactive. He has snapped at people on walks including a runner when they passed close by however he has never bitten anyone. He can be very nervous of large vehicles and tractor's which can cause him to cower so he needs reassurance. Star is toilet trained and crate trained. He can be left alone with no issues for up to 5 hours and sleeps well overnight. He very rarely has accidents. He also travels well in the car. Star has not met cats and therefore cannot share a home with one. Star has previously shared his kennel with other dogs but did have some fights in the kennel. He has also shown some food guarding behaviours with a visiting dog although was good with her on the walks. it is felt a dog free home is best. Star did live with children and was great with them, however due to his reactions to the male in the home he needs a child free home. Star needs a quiet home with very minimal visitors. A female primary carer will be important for him and any males in the home will need to be very patient and dedicated to building his trust with meets and slow introductions. Star's owner has said the following: Star likes a tennis ball in the garden and loves a kong filled with little treats. He also has a soft toy which he plays with when he's excited before a walk. He can be stubborn if he doesn't want to do something such as move from one room to another and treats to coax him doesn't work. However he is smart and will be trainable with someone who has the skills.
