This is our beautiful boy hugo who will be 17 weeks old on Sunday.
He’s a beagle cross cocker
Writing this advert is honestly one of the hardest things we have ever had to do. We absolutely adore Hugo and have completely fallen in love with him, which is why we are not rushing to rehome him. We have been left in a position where, as heartbreaking as it is, we feel we have no other choice. We are happy to explain the circumstances privately to anyone we feel could potentially be the right person for him.
Hugo really is such a gorgeous little character. He is a confident, happy, loving and cheeky Beagle puppy who has brought so much love into our home in the short time we have had him.
Like any 17-week-old puppy, he isn't perfect — and we don't expect him to be. He is doing really well with his toilet training, but still has the occasional accident. He is still learning and growing, and whoever has Hugo needs to understand that he is very much still a baby.
He is fully vaccinated and up to date with his flea and worming treatments*l*. He also has his own cage/crate. He does currently find being in his crate difficult and can be quite whiney and distressed, so this is something his new family would need to work on slowly and patiently if they wanted to continue crate training him.
Hugo is incredibly food motivated, which makes him so much fun to train. He can sit, lie down, give paw and is learning to stay, and he picks things up really quickly when there are treats involved.
He is also a very typical Beagle. If there is a scent, Hugo is interested! He is great off lead when he has our older dog with him, but when he is on his own his nose tends to hit the floor and off he goes exploring. Because of this, his recall will need plenty of work and he would need to be kept safe until that training is well established.
One thing that is particularly important for us is that Hugo has struggled a little with being left alone. He initially experienced separation anxiety and would cry when we went out. We have found that he is so much happier when he has our older dog with him*, and he now settles much better and doesn't cry when left with him. His new family will need to be prepared to continue working patiently on this rather than expecting him to be comfortable being left straight away.
We honestly just want someone who will **love Hugo as much as we do**.
We would love for his new home to be someone who understands Beagles and everything that comes with them — the energy, the stubbornness, the incredible noses, the food obsession, the mischief and, most importantly, the huge amount of love they give back. ❤️
A home with another friendly, suitable dog could be lovely for Hugo because of how well he does with our older dog, but this isn't essential if the right person can give him plenty of time, companionship and stimulation.
**There will be a home check**, and we will want to speak properly with anyone interested. We are not looking for the first person who messages us, and we certainly don't want Hugo going to someone on impulse.
We would rather take our time and wait for the perfect forever home, even if that takes weeks or longer.
This isn't a decision we have made lightly, and letting Hugo go will absolutely break our hearts. We just want to be able to look back and know that, despite how painful this has been, we found him the family who will adore him, look after him and keep him safe for the rest of his life.
