Description

Goose is a medium-sized, one-year-old male who is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. Goose is deaf and will need a home experienced in working with deaf dogs. Goose was dumped in Romania along with his siblings, father and mother when she had her puppies. The whole family was taken to a public shelter before being rescued and brought to the UK in January 2025. On arrival at our kennels, Goose shared a kennel with one of his siblings but had several fights with others and is now housed alone. He has shown reactivity towards both people and dogs, as well as to traffic and sudden movement. Goose can be vocal and reactive, especially if someone moves suddenly or makes direct eye contact. He has attempted to bite when approached unexpectedly and can take time to calm down. During a recent meet, he growled and snapped at a visitor after she leaned into his space. He also reacted strongly during a vet visit, although he travelled quietly in his crate on the way there. Goose enjoys his walks and is generally settled with handlers he knows. He can react to passing dogs or traffic but is beginning to settle more quickly with consistent handling. When calm, he can be affectionate and enjoys fuss and interaction, especially with people he trusts. Goose has been introduced to positive reinforcement training using hand signals and a “thumbs up” marker through advice from Nose to Trail. This helps him understand when he’s doing well and supports his communication as a deaf dog. His new home will need to continue with this approach to maintain consistency and build his confidence. Goose cannot live with other dogs, cats or children. He will need a quiet, adult-only home (18+) with experience of deaf and reactive dogs. His new family will need patience to help him build trust and time to learn his communication cues. Goose is currently being muzzle-trained and will need to meet prospective adopters at the kennels so that introductions can be carried out gradually. Goose is a bright, sensitive young dog who is learning to cope with the world despite his deafness. With patient, experienced owners who continue his hand-signal training, he will keep making progress and show his affectionate side once he feels safe and understood.
