Description

Elphie previously known as Joy, is a 4.5 year old Female. She is spayed and fully vaccinated. Her most recent vaccination was in September 2025 and she is routinely vaccinated for kennel cough. Her last flea and worm treatment was on 27 January 2026. Elphie was rescued as a puppy from Breasta public shelter with her mum and sister in November 2021, she was described as a happy, friendly girl who was great with other dogs, cats, children and men. Elphie moved to a foster home in March 2022 where she stayed for 1 month, her foster said she was an amazing girl but cheeky. She did amazing with the children and other dogs in the home too. Elphie shortly moved to her current adoption home where she has lived with 4 years. Unfortunately her family have made the decision to surrender her due to Elphie recently bit a neighbour. The incident happened after she had returned from a walk. She had been wearing her muzzle during the walk as usual, but when she arrived home the muzzle was removed because it was covered in fox faeces. While she was outside the house she saw a neighbour walking past and ran towards them and bit their leg, breaking the skin and drawing blood. Elphie has lived with two children aged twelve and eight during her time with the family and she has always been affectionate and protective towards them. Within her immediate family she is loving, playful and enjoys spending time with them both indoors and outdoors. She particularly enjoys playing with toys, exploring the garden and going on walks. She enjoys carrying sticks when walking in quiet areas and is generally happiest when she is in calm environments without a lot of activity around her. She is house trained, crate trained and generally settles well at home. She sleeps overnight on her bed in the kitchen and is comfortable with this routine. She is able to be left alone for periods of time and has previously been left for up to four hours without any issues, although one member of the household works from home so she is usually around people during the day. She travels well in the car and is comfortable wearing a collar, harness and lead. On walks Elphie generally behaves well and is capable of walking to heel. She can sometimes pull if she catches an interesting scent but overall she walks well and enjoys being outside. She tends to be comfortable around people and dogs when she is out walking and she particularly enjoys seeing other dogs. She does not have a history of aggression towards other dogs. Elphie has been amazing with the children she currently lives with however due to her behavioural issues it is felt older chidren 14+ would be best. She can live with other dogs with slow and sensible introductions too. Elphie has been around cats in Romania but has not been around them since, she could potentially live with dog savvy cats following sensible introductions. Despite these positive qualities, Elphie does have significant behavioural challenges that have required careful management. The main difficulty is her behaviour around unfamiliar people in or around the home environment. She does not cope well with visitors and when people visit the house she needs to be kept in a separate room for safety. She is comfortable with her immediate family and the owner’s mother, but outside of these individuals she can react aggressively to people entering her space. The family sought professional support and worked with a behaviourist for approximately six months to try to address issues including resource guarding and reactivity towards visitors. Unfortunately the training did not result in significant improvement in these areas. Elphie has shown some resource guarding behaviour, particularly if she has a toy while she is resting in her bed. Because of this the family have learned to manage situations carefully and avoid approaching her when she has certain items. As a safety measure Elphie is always walked wearing a muzzle. This has been used as a precaution due to her behavioural concerns and the family have worked hard over the years to ensure that situations are managed safely and responsibly. The family live in a residential area close to neighbours, including homes with young children. Over the four years they have owned Elphie they have been very careful to manage her behaviour and prevent situations where something like this could occur. This is the first incident where she has actually injured someone, but it has understandably caused serious concern for the safety of others around them. Elphie would likely only be safe in a very specific and experienced setting with people who understand behavioural management and who can provide a very controlled environment with minimal exposure to unfamiliar visitors. The family feel it is important to be completely transparent about her behaviour so that any decisions made about her future are done with full understanding of both her strengths and her risks.
