Jasper is a lovely and very well tempered 6 year old Labrador x curly coated retriever. He currently lives in a home with a cat and two children between the ages of 6 and 12 and has previously lived in a home with a younger small dog and has been socialised around younger children. We took Jasper in around 2 years ago after his previous owners could no longer care for him, we were told due to their relationship breakdown and relocating, however we weren’t given a full picture of him and we are struggling with his more challenging behaviours. Jasper suffers with severe separation anxiety. He latches on to the first person who spends the night with him in a new environment. Should this person then leave the house, he becomes very anxious which is displayed through whining, howling, panting and pacing the house looking for them. Although he is vocal he has never shown any aggression. If he is left completely alone, his anxiety is even more heightened, he paces and needs to look out of windows by any means necessary, he jumps on furniture to see out of windows, he jumps up to open doors even if closed, he can jump over safety gates due to his size (as he is mixed with a curly coated retriever he is larger than a standard Labrador), he has also pulled down multiple blinds in our home to try and see out of windows. This being said, he isn’t deliberately destructive, he doesn’t chew or claw, he is inadvertently chaotic and causes damage due to his anxiety. Jasper is NOT castrated, our vet advised against this as it may make his anxiety worse. Jasper is up to date with vaccines and is on a vet health care plan so is up to date with prescribed flea and worm treatments. Jasper is also scared of clean water, he has been to a groomer before and tolerated this fine, but will not be bathed at home. So long as his favourite person is at home with him, Jasper is a lazy boy and is good as gold. He loves cuddles, belly rubs and his favourite is a chin scratch. He is gentle with our children. Jasper doesn’t like very long walks, and can be strong, he is fine with other dogs on walks. We have never walked him off lead as we don’t have any information about his recall. Jasper only takes a couple of days to settle in a new environment, but as above, he will latch strongly to one person. The first 24 hours before he settles he is almost inconsolable but settles quickly. This information wasn’t provided to us when we took Jasper in, and although the majority of the time he is a perfect dog, his anxiety and behaviours when we have to leave him alone or my partner leaves the house is becoming too much for my own mental health. We don’t feel Jasper would be suitable for anyone who is out of the house for long periods without being able to take him with them and would need someone capable of managing a strong dog due to his size.
