Description
3 year old German shepherd male in need of a loving home. We are absolutely heartbroken to be re-homing him, but we don't feel we can give him the time and training that he needs. He is such a gorgeous, loving and loyal dog. He loves nothing more than a cuddle on the sofa and human attention. He needs an owner who has the time and patience to further his training and address his reactivity towards other dogs.
Not suitable for a home with cats- very high prey drive.
Unsure of suitability for a home with other dogs- had one fight with a dog from doggy daycare (which we believe caused his reactivity). Due to his reactivity, he only socialises with familiar dogs. Is absolutely fine in open spaces, but has not been in an enclosed space with another dog for over a year.
Loves children- has been raised with my son from a newborn and has spent lots of time with children of all ages. Loves to play, however, doesn't know his own size/strength and can accidentally be a bit rough.
Reactivity- we originally worked with a trainer over 6 months to address reactivity. Made some progress, where he is no longer reactive towards bikes/lorries/people walking past, however, is still reactive towards dogs. Much improved, and not all dogs, but still makes walks a little difficult.
Walking- pulls like a train. We haven't been consistent enough with training. We use a halti to make walks more bearable, but needs a lot of work on walking.
Recall- great, until it isn't! As mentioned previously, very high prey drive so is gone in a second if something catches his eye. Would also happily run up to another dog barking, so is walked on the long line.
Training- knows basic commands, sit, lay down, leave it, bed, crate. Absolutely thrives when training and undoubtably requires someone to give time and consistency to training. He wants to please and is very clever.
Crate- he is crate trained, as recommended by our dog trainer. He sleeps in his crate overnight and this is where he is calmest. He happily goes to his crate and sees it as his safe space.
Barking- he is a typical German shepherd who likes to bark at everything. If there's a knock at the door, a noise in the garden, he'll let you know!
Protective- incredibly protective and true to his breed, particularly with regards to guarding the house. Does not like the postman and although he has never bitten/harmed anyone, we have never put him in a position where this would be possible. Definitely need to be cautious.
Castrated- he was castrated just after he turned 1, as this was recommended to help combat his reactivity/potential aggression towards other dogs.
Not KC registered and really unsure of authenticity of parents- viewed them both and they both looked like pure bred German shepherds, but no certificates. Wish I knew then what a know now about breeding as I do not believe this was a reputable breeder.
Would need to meet him and discuss home environment before consideration for sale. Can come with his crate/blankets/halti if required.
