Description

Dave was adopted in February 26 but unfortunately he was surrendered after just a day in the home as he struggled with the children and the adopter wasn't willing to seperate for the recommended slow introductions. The following reasons were given. Dave is not suited to be with children, he needs an adult or female only house holdI feel Dave needs a child free home and possibly even just a female carer. Dave returned to the original foster and they have the following update. As Dave has gotten more confident there have been occasions of him lunging towards people and barking that may seem aggressive to some, he has no bite history and will respond to commands such as here and sit, its a very immediate reaction and he normally calms down very quickly. He is learning to manage this but the behaviour is normally triggered by someone coming into a room Dave is already in, usually with a human he trusts already present in the room. This behaviour was observed while is was in his first adopters home with there 10 year old son and is more pointed towards men. So likely would need to be a child free home (or 16+). The behaviour also generally has been pointed more towards men. On walks Dave has also gained confidence and now says hello to other dogs and sometimes people but he can still be quite skitterish when approaching new people for the first time. He is a lot more confident on walks than in the home and has shown none of the same lunging behaviour on walks 11.01.25 Dave is a medium sized male dog that was found on the streets of Romania and taken into a rescue in November 24. He was a quieter friendly dog in shelter who could be overwhelmed by all the noise. He is microchipped, vaccinated and neutered with no known health issues. Behaviour Disclosure – Dave Dave is a very affectionate, gentle, and sensitive dog who forms strong bonds with his people. He is especially loving with his main carer and shows his happiness through full-body wiggles, excited greetings, and a love of closeness, petting, and routine. He enjoys walks, tasty chews, treats, and his squeaky duck toy, and he is widely described as a very cute and charming dog. Confidence & Sensitivities Dave can be nervous around unfamiliar people, particularly when they enter the home. When visitors arrive, he will usually retreat to a safe space and may bark initially. With time and calm behaviour from visitors, he is able to settle and often relax or sleep. Sudden movements or direct approaches may cause him to retreat again and bark. Outside the home, Dave is much more relaxed and curious around people and will simply move away if he feels uncomfortable. Dave is more sensitive around men and can bark or make growling noises if approached too quickly, particularly indoors. He has never bitten anyone, and when overwhelmed, his primary coping strategy is avoidance rather than confrontation. He would do best with a female main carer and with men who are patient and allow him to build trust at his own pace. Handling & Equipment Dave accepts his collar, harness, lead, and coat without issue. He now willingly approaches for his harness in anticipation of walks. He enjoys walking, is generally relaxed and curious outdoors, and walks nicely on lead with minimal pulling. Resource & Space Guarding Dave does not guard food or objects from people and allows items to be taken from his mouth without issue. He may occasionally guard his safe spaces (such as his bed) from another dog in the home by growling or showing teeth. This behaviour has never escalated to a fight and has been improving with time and management. Dogs & Other Animals Dave currently lives peacefully with another dog and gains confidence from canine companionship, though another dog is not essential for him to thrive. There has been occasional mutual growling between the dogs around resources or safe spaces, but Dave has never bitten another dog. On walks, he is curious about other dogs but does not actively approach them. Dave has seen cats on walks and has shown no reaction, even when another dog reacted nearby. Children Dave has been around children outdoors and has shown calm curiosity. However, very young or highly energetic children may be overwhelming for him. He would be best suited to a home with older, dog-savvy children who can respect his boundaries and allow him to initiate interactions. Alone Time & Destructive Behaviour Dave can be left alone for short periods. He may vocalise briefly but settles on his own. There was one isolated incident of carpet scratching on New Year’s Eve, likely related to fireworks. He has not shown destructive behaviour before or since. He enjoys stealing slippers or shoes but does so gently and without guarding; this behaviour is easily managed. Daves foster says 'Dave is an absolute sweetheart, though he can be a little nervous around my husband. He is incredibly affectionate and adorable when he sees me after I’ve been out - even if it’s only for five minutes 🤣 - wriggling his whole body with excitement. He reacts in a similar way on walks when he sees my husband. He would do best with a female main carer and with men who are patient and allow him to adjust in his own time. He loves being petted, treats, tasty chews and his squeaky toy duck. He enjoys his routine and has the funniest little quirks - like scratching against bushes outside or always choosing the same spot on walks to do his “business”. He’s also a slipper thief but in the cutest way possible (and it’s completely fine to take them from him). Everyone says he’s such a bonnie dog and we completely agree - he’s very, very cute! I love him so much and I know he will be an amazing companion for the right person'.
