The Cavapoochon boasts a compact, well-proportioned build that conveys sturdiness without bulkiness. Its overall teddy bear-like appearance is characterised by a soft, expressive face and a dense, hypoallergenic coat.

Size and Build

Males typically stand between 25 and 38 cm tall, weighing 6 to 9 kg, while females range from 25 to 35 cm in height and weigh 4 to 7 kg. Their body length slightly exceeds height, with a balanced topline and a deep chest, supported by well-muscled legs designed for activity and agility.

Coat and Colours

The breed's coat is naturally curly or wavy, soft to the touch, and minimal shedding makes it favoured by allergy sufferers. Coat colours vary widely, including cream, apricot, red, tricolour, and parti-colours. Maintaining this coat requires regular grooming to prevent matting and preserve health.

Distinctive Features

The head is rounded with a broad skull and a distinct stop, topped by medium-sized, pendant ears covered in curls. Their tail is naturally curved, carried with a light and buoyant gait that matches their lively disposition and agility.

Gender Differences

Males tend to be slightly larger and sturdier, while females appear a bit more delicate in build though equally spirited. Personality differences are subtle and more influenced by individual character than gender.

For prospective Cavapoochon owners, sourcing from ethical and responsible breeders ensures healthier, well-socialised puppies. Visit find Cavapoochon for sale to connect with reputable breeders in the UK.

Finding Ethical Breeders

Seek breeders who perform comprehensive health screenings on parent dogs, provide clear pedigree and health documentation, and prioritise puppy welfare and socialisation. Visiting the breeder and their facilities helps assess conditions and the puppies’ upbringing.

Health Testing Verification

Essential health tests include screenings for Mitral Valve Disease, luxating patella, hip dysplasia, and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA). Demand to see official health certificates before purchase.

Puppy Selection Process

Observe the puppy’s temperament, energy, and interaction with littermates and humans. Avoid puppies showing fearfulness or aggression. Confirm vaccinations and vet checks are up to date.

Contract and Guarantee Review

Contracts should include clauses on health guarantees, return policies, and full disclosure of vaccination and microchipping status. Beware of sellers reluctant to provide veterinary records or health histories.

Rescue and Adoption Options

Consider adopting from mixed breed or specialist Cavapoochon rescues. Adoption provides a loving dog a second chance and supports responsible pet ownership.

Caring for a Cavapoochon involves managing their grooming, exercise, and social needs to maintain welfare and happiness.

Daily Care Routine

Mornings and evenings should include 20-30 minute walks, supplemented with indoor play and training sessions to meet their moderate exercise requirements. Mental stimulation with puzzle toys or obedience tasks helps deter boredom and promotes good behaviour.

Living Environment Needs

The breed is well-suited to apartment or house living, provided it receives quality daily exercise and mental engagement. A secure garden is beneficial but not obligatory. Being a small breed, they require protection from extreme temperatures with appropriate climate controls at home.

Seasonal Care Adjustments

In warmer months, ensure shade and hydration to prevent overheating; in winter, provide warm bedding and consider coats for outdoor activities. Grooming frequency may adjust seasonally to maintain coat condition and prevent dryness or matting.

Senior Care Adaptations

Older Cavapoochons benefit from softer bedding, potential mobility aids, and nutritional adjustments. Increased vet visits help monitor age-related health changes and maintain quality of life.

The Cavapoochon is exceptionally family-friendly, particularly suited to homes with children due to its gentle temperament and patience.

Age-Specific Interactions

For toddlers, supervision is essential to prevent accidental injury as the dog is small and delicate. Young children should learn to respect boundaries, avoiding pulling on ears or tails and understanding when the dog needs rest. Teenagers often bond deeply with Cavapoochons, enjoying their loyal and interactive nature.

Teaching Children Proper Interaction

Children should be taught to approach calmly, use gentle touch, and respect the dog’s personal space, especially during grooming and rest periods. Setting clear behavioural rules helps create safe and loving interactions.

Breed-Specific Considerations

The small size of the Cavapoochon makes it vulnerable to injury during rough play, so calm environments and gentle handling are crucial. Their sensitivity benefits from consistent, patient interaction that fosters a nurturing family dynamic.

Creating Safe Environments

Adults should supervise all interactions between very young children and the dog, ensuring the Cavapoochon has access to a quiet retreat such as a crate or bed to avoid stress and overstimulation.

Cavapoochons require moderate daily exercise balancing physical activity and mental challenges.

Daily Exercise Requirements

They typically need 30 to 60 minutes of daily activity split between two walks and interactive play. Exercise should be tailored to age and health to prevent overexertion.

Suitable Activities

Engage them with gentle fetch games, short agility courses, obedience tasks, and scent or puzzle games to keep them physically and mentally stimulated.

Exercise Restrictions

Puppies need controlled, shorter sessions to protect developing joints. Extreme temperature exposure should be avoided or mitigated with proper shelter and adjustment of activity intensity.

Mental Stimulation Ideas

Incorporate puzzle feeders, scent trails, and training games regularly to keep their intelligent minds occupied and reduce boredom-related behaviours.

Nutrition tailored to their small breed needs supports optimal health and longevity.

Nutritional Requirements

Cavapoochons thrive on high-quality commercial dog foods formulated for small breeds, typically with 22-28% protein and 12-18% fat content. Caloric intake should be monitored to prevent obesity, common among small dogs.

Feeding Schedule Guidelines

Adults are usually fed twice daily, while puppies require three to four smaller meals to support growth and energy demands. Treats should be healthy and given sparingly to avoid weight gain.

Special Dietary Considerations

Some may have sensitivities; limited ingredient diets and supplements such as omega fatty acids can help skin and coat health.

Weight Management

Maintaining an ideal body condition is crucial to avoid obesity and joint strain. Regular weighing and vet checkups assist in managing a healthy weight.

The Cavapoochon’s signature curly coat requires diligent grooming to preserve its hypoallergenic qualities and prevent painful matting.

Coat Maintenance Schedule

Brushing should take place several times weekly, ideally daily to prevent tangles, especially in high-risk areas like ears and underarms. Bathing every 4 to 6 weeks with gentle dog shampoos maintains skin and coat health.

Professional Grooming Requirements

Professional grooming every 4 to 6 weeks is advisable to maintain the iconic teddy bear trim and manage matting, costing between £40 and £80 per session depending on location and groomer expertise.

Home Grooming Techniques

Owners should equip themselves with slicker brushes and fine-toothed combs suitable for curly coats and start grooming routines early to habituate the dog. Special attention is needed for ears, legs, and belly to prevent mats.

Common Grooming Challenges

Mats can lead to skin irritation and discomfort if untreated. Ear infections are more common due to hair growth in the ear canal. Minimal seasonal shedding occurs but coat texture may vary, requiring adjusted grooming techniques.

Generally robust, Cavapoochons benefit from hybrid vigour but still inherit some health issues common to their foundation breeds. They typically live 12 to 15 years with proper care.

Breed-Specific Health Conditions

Predominant inherited concerns include Mitral Valve Disease prevalent in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Progressive Retinal Atrophy leading to vision loss, hip dysplasia affecting joint mobility, and luxating patella impacting kneecap stability. While less common than purebreds, monitoring is essential.

Genetic Testing Requirements

Reputable breeders conduct DNA screening and health checks for luxating patella, hip dysplasia, cardiac health, and eye disorders. Buyers should verify health certificates before purchase.

Preventive Healthcare Schedule

Standard preventive care includes vaccinations, parasite control, dental hygiene, and annual vet visits. Early identification of cardiovascular or joint issues allows for effective management through medication and lifestyle adaptation.

Insurance Considerations

Given the moderate health risks, obtaining insurance that covers heart and joint conditions is prudent. Annual premiums range around £300-£500, providing financial security against expected hereditary-related claims.

The Cavapoochon is a relatively recent addition to the canine world, originating in the early 2000s in the United States. Created by breeders Steve and Linda Rogers, the breed was deliberately developed to fuse the gentle temperament and hypoallergenic qualities of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Bichon Frise, and Toy Poodle.

Early Development

Early breeding aimed to capture the best traits of each parent breed, focusing on intelligence, low shedding, and a friendly disposition suitable for family life. By blending bloodlines with complementary health profiles, breeders sought to reduce hereditary problems common in single breeds. Initial development was patient and small-scale, led by private enthusiasts concentrating on temperament and coat type.

Modern Recognition

Though the Cavapoochon lacks Kennel Club recognition as a pedigree breed due to its designer status, it has garnered a loyal following in the UK and internationally. Breed clubs formed in the 2010s promote best practices in responsible breeding and health screening to maintain the breed’s well-being. As a designer crossbreed, the Cavapoochon remains popular as a companion animal rather than a formal show dog.

The Cavapoochon is a delightful designer crossbreed celebrated for its charming teddy bear appearance and affectionate nature. This small canine is a unique blend of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Bichon Frise, and Toy Poodle, combining traits from each parent to create a companion that is both intelligent and hypoallergenic. Bred primarily as a companion dog, the Cavapoochon has transitioned into a much-loved family pet, ideal for allergy sufferers due to its low-shedding coat.

Physically, the breed is compact yet sturdy, typically standing between 25 and 38 cm in height and weighing between 4 and 9 kg depending on gender. Their teddy bear-like face, soft curly or wavy coat, and expressive eyes make them an appealing companion that fits comfortably in both apartment and house living settings. Their temperament is gentle, friendly, and highly social, thriving on human interaction and forming deep bonds with their family.

Owners with an active lifestyle and time for regular engagement will find Cavapoochons a rewarding companion. Though small, their mental and physical stimulation needs should not be underestimated; regular exercise and interactive play keep them happy and well-behaved. Their playful intelligence also makes them relatively easy to train, particularly with patient, positive reinforcement methods.

Providing care for a Cavapoochon involves a commitment to their grooming due to their curly, mat-prone coat, alongside consistent exercise and socialisation. Prospective owners should be aware of their sensitivity to prolonged solitude, as they can develop separation anxiety if left alone for long hours.

Perfect For

Families, singles, or seniors seeking an affectionate, small companion that adapts well to indoor living. Allergy sufferers benefit from their hypoallergenic coat, and owners who enjoy regular interactive play and training will appreciate their trainability and sociable nature.

Key Considerations

Potential owners must be ready for the breed’s high grooming needs and prevent matting through regular brushing and professional care. The breed’s sensitivity to separation requires owners who can dedicate time to companionship and socialisation to support positive behaviour and mental health.

The Cavapoochon is affectionately known for its warm, sociable nature, making it a superb family companion. Their love of interaction and intelligence encourages strong, lasting bonds with their owners.

Core Personality Traits

These dogs are intelligent, eager to please, and display a playful, curious nature. Their gentle and patient demeanour suits homes with children and other pets well. With prompt socialisation, they adapt warmly to strangers and new environments.

Social Behavior

They are sensitive to being left alone and may develop separation anxiety without proper habituation. With structured socialisation and introduction, Cavapoochons generally cohabit peacefully with other dogs and smaller animals. Their emotional acuity allows them to perform roles such as therapy or assistance dogs.

Working Instincts

Primarily bred as companion animals, they showcase a keen desire to please and are alert, making them responsive to obedience training and canine sports. They lack strong working drive typical of traditional working breeds but enjoy interactive mental tasks.

Common Behavioral Challenges

Owners may encounter separation anxiety, which can be mitigated with gradual training and sufficient mental enrichment. Consistent boundaries and gentle correction prevent excessive barking and destructive chewing, common in bored or anxious individuals.

Cavapoochons rate highly in trainability, benefitting greatly from positive reinforcement and engaging training methods. Their intelligence and eagerness to please enable rapid learning with proper motivation.

Puppy Training Priorities

Early focus on basic obedience, gentle socialisation, and house training is vital. The socialisation window up to 16 weeks supports confidence building and acceptance of new people, dogs, and environments.

Training Methods That Work

Reward-based techniques using treats, praise, and play keep training enjoyable and focused. Short, frequent sessions combined with mental challenges such as puzzle toys maintain attention and reduce boredom. Proper leash manners and recall training are important due to their friendly nature and curiosity.

Advanced Training Potential

The breed excels in obedience trials, therapy dog training, and sports requiring focused attention and motivation. Continuous mental stimulation is key to maintaining behavioural balance and happiness.

Common Training Mistakes

Avoiding harsh discipline and inconsistent commands is critical to maintain trust. Lack of socialisation can lead to fearfulness, and neglecting mental engagement may cause behavioural problems like barking or chewing.
