Working

Size and Build

The Dogue de Bordeaux is a large molosser-type dog with males standing approximately 56 to 61 cm at the withers and females ranging from 51 to 56 cm tall. Males typically weigh between 29 and 34 kg, with females slightly lighter at 25 to 29 kg. This robust breed features a muscular, compact body with broad chest and solid frame, designed to combine strength and agility. Muscle definition is prominent in the shoulders, thighs, and forelegs, reflecting the dog's powerful working heritage.

Coat and Colours

The short, fine, and soft coat lies close to the skin, lending a sleek yet sturdy appearance despite the Dogue’s bulky build. Accepted colours are predominantly in shades of fawn ranging from pale Isabella to deep mahogany, including red variations. The breed may display three accepted mask types: black mask with black nose and shaded ears, brown mask with matching nose and eye rims, or no mask characterized by reddish skin and nose typical of fawn coats. Any white markings are minimal and restricted to the chest and extremities of the legs, while chocolate hues are not recognised under the Kennel Club standard.

Distinctive Features

Perhaps the most striking feature is the Dogue’s massive, broad head with a slightly rounded skull, pronounced stop, and deeply set wrinkles and furrows including a median groove along the skull’s centre. The short, powerful muzzle is slightly upturned with broad, well-pigmented nostrils. The jaws are undershot with pronounced pendulous flews and thick upper lips. Eyes are oval-shaped, widely spaced, and range in colour from hazel to dark brown, depending on coat shade. The ears are small, set high, fold forward with rounded tips, typically darker than the coat. The tail is thick at the root, tapering to the tip, carried low at rest but raised when alert or excited, complementing the breed’s balanced, powerful gait.

Gender Differences

Males are generally larger and heavier, exhibiting more pronounced muscularity and dominance in behaviour, requiring firmer leadership. Females are slightly smaller and tend to have softer, more compliant temperaments, though equally protective and loyal. Both genders exhibit calm intelligence and strong family bonds. The Dogue de Bordeaux’s gait is surprisingly free and athletic for its size, with power evident in the hindquarters and a slightly lowered head at speed.

Note: The Kennel Club breed standard advises against exaggerations that could compromise health or movement, promoting a balanced, sound dog.

Purchasing a well-bred Dogue de Bordeaux puppy on Pets4Homes currently ranges between £500 and £1,000 when buying from individual breeders, with prices potentially higher from licensed breeders due to pedigree, health testing, and breeding quality.

Initial setup costs include essentials such as quality ceramic bowls (£20-£40), a sturdy collar and lead (£25-£50), a durable dog crate (£50-£100), and a comfortable bed (£30-£60). Additionally, grooming supplies and dental care products should be budgeted for, costing around £30 to £60 initially.

Ongoing monthly expenses vary but typically include premium dog food (£60-£80), regular grooming supplies, and routine veterinary care such as vaccinations and worming. Pet insurance is highly recommended, with costs averaging £80 per month for basic cover and up to £180 for lifetime policies, influenced by location and the dog's age.

Annual veterinary bills can exceed £1,200, covering health checks, vaccinations, preventive treatments, and unexpected medical issues. Given the breed's predisposition to health problems, budgeting for veterinary care is essential.

Overall, prospective owners should expect monthly running costs between £120 and £200, excluding initial purchase price, to ensure the health and well-being of their Dogue de Bordeaux companion.

When considering purchasing a Dogue de Bordeaux puppy, it is vital to engage with responsible, reputable breeders who prioritise health testing, ethical breeding practices, and proper socialisation of puppies. Buyers should always visit the breeder’s home to meet the puppy alongside its mother to assess conditions and verify authenticity.

Finding Ethical Breeders

Check breeder credentials, including Kennel Club registration, adherence to breeding limits, and compliance with health screening protocols such as BVA/KC Hip Dysplasia Scheme. Avoid breeders offering unusually low prices or demanding payment before seeing the puppy in person, to guard against scams.

Health Testing Verification

Request documentation of health screenings for hips, elbows, and heart conditions, ideally with test results registered with official databases or breed clubs. Confirm vaccinations, worming, and microchipping records are complete and up to date.

Puppy Selection Process

Assess puppy temperament and health in person, observing behaviour with littermates and human interaction. Choose puppies showing confident, balanced temperaments and good health indicators.

Contract and Guarantee Review

Ensure a clear purchase contract is provided, covering health guarantees, return policies, and breeder responsibilities. Be cautious of vague or unsigned agreements.

Rescue and Adoption Options

Consider breed-specific rescues such as the Dogue de Bordeaux Rescue UK, which can provide rehoming opportunities for adult dogs or puppies in need, offering an ethical alternative to buying.

Daily Care Routine

Providing a structured daily routine that balances exercise, grooming, nutrition, and mental stimulation is vital for the Dogue de Bordeaux. Most owners organise two to three walks daily, totalling around 60 to 80 minutes, interspersed with calm rest to accommodate the breed’s slow pace and large build. Weekly grooming to manage shedding and skin folds is essential.

Living Environment Needs

The breed thrives in homes with spacious, securely fenced gardens that accommodate their physical strength and propensity to leap or climb. Indoor living with regular family interaction suits their social nature well. Due to brachycephalic traits, the Dogue requires cooling strategies during warmer months such as shaded rest areas and plenty of fresh water.

Seasonal Care Adjustments

Summer management entails avoiding peak heat times for exercise and ensuring skin fold hygiene to prevent infections. Winter care focuses on comfortable bedding to support joints and dry, moisturised skin. Regular monitoring for seasonal coat and skin changes is beneficial.

Senior Care Adaptations

Aged Dogues benefit from soft, supportive bedding, easy access to food and water, and gentle exercise adapted to their physical condition. Regular veterinary assessments for age-related cognitive and physical changes help maintain quality of life.

Age-Specific Interactions

The Dogue de Bordeaux is naturally affectionate and gentle but its large size means it is not ideal for families with very young children due to the risk of accidental rough play. It is better suited to households with older children who understand how to behave safely and respectfully around dogs, and who can participate in supervised interaction.

Teaching Children Proper Interaction

Parents should teach children to interact with the Dogue calmly, respecting its space especially during feeding or resting times. Knowing warning signs of discomfort or irritation is important. Constant supervision prevents accidents or misunderstandings.

Breed-Specific Considerations

Because of its protective instincts, early socialisation is imperative to manage over-protectiveness around children and strangers. High prey drive means care must be taken with smaller pets, avoiding unsupervised encounters.

Creating Safe Environments

A securely fenced, spacious garden and designated indoor safe zones provide comfort for both Dogue and children. Barriers such as baby gates help define safe areas, and careful supervision during play ensures harmony and minimises risk.

Daily Exercise Requirements

The Dogue de Bordeaux benefits from about 60 to 80 minutes of moderate, well-paced exercise daily. This typically includes two to three walks complemented by secure off-lead playtime in a safe garden. Puppy exercise should be limited to protect developing joints, and care must be taken during hot weather due to brachycephalic features.

Suitable Activities

Suitable activities include calm long leash walks, gentle play sessions, and mentally engaging games like scent work or obedience training. Some enjoy water play, though owners should assess individual dogs’ preferences and safety.

Exercise Restrictions

Puppies require strict limits on jumping, stair climbing, and excessive exertion to avoid joint stress. During high temperatures, activity should be reduced and conducted in cooler periods to avoid respiratory issues.

Mental Stimulation Ideas

Mental engagement can be enhanced with interactive puzzles, obedience challenges, scent games, and structured play to prevent boredom and resulting destructive behaviours common in intelligent working dogs.

Nutritional Requirements

Puppies require high-protein, balanced-fat diets to support healthy growth without overfeeding, which stresses joints. Adults need nutrient-dense, calorie-controlled meals catering to large breeds to maintain lean muscle and avoid obesity.

Feeding Schedule Guidelines

Multiple small meals per day (3-4) are recommended for puppies, transitioning to two meals daily for adults. Portion size should adjust to weight and exercise, with gradual dietary transitions to prevent digestive upset.

Special Dietary Considerations

Food sensitivities and skin-related allergies may necessitate limited ingredient or hypoallergenic diets. Joint supplements like glucosamine and omega fatty acids often support long-term mobility and skin health.

Weight Management

Maintaining ideal body condition through calorie control and activity is critical to prevent obesity, which shortens lifespan and exacerbates joint issues. Regular monitoring of body shape and weight is advised.

Coat Maintenance Schedule

The Dogue de Bordeaux has a short coat requiring weekly brushing with a grooming glove or soft bristle brush to remove loose hair and distribute natural oils, maintaining coat health and minimising shedding. Particular attention must be paid to cleaning and drying facial folds to prevent bacterial infections common to the breed.

Professional Grooming Requirements

While most grooming can be handled at home, periodic professional visits are recommended for nail trimming and deep facial fold cleaning to uphold skin health. These visits typically occur every few months and help manage hygiene effectively.

Home Grooming Techniques

Essential grooming tools include grooming gloves, slicker and bristle brushes, fine-toothed combs, nail clippers, and dog-safe shampoos and conditioners. Ears should be cleaned regularly to prevent wax buildup and infection.

Common Grooming Challenges

Challenges include managing excessive drooling and slobber, matting in facial folds, preventing skin infections, and dealing with seasonal shedding. Regular ear and dental care support overall grooming health.

Breed-Specific Health Conditions

The Dogue de Bordeaux is predisposed to several hereditary health issues associated with its large size and brachycephalic features. Hip and elbow dysplasia are common, causing joint pain and mobility impairment. Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome results in respiratory difficulties and heat sensitivity. Heart conditions including aortic stenosis and tricuspid valve dysplasia have notable prevalence. The breed is also prone to skin fold dermatitis due to its facial wrinkles and at risk of bloat, a potentially fatal gastric dilatation-volvulus.

Genetic Testing Requirements

Stud dogs are required to undergo hip scoring under the BVA/KC Hip Dysplasia Scheme. Breeders are also advised to conduct elbow evaluations and heart screenings to reduce hereditary risks, supporting healthy breed progression.

Preventive Healthcare Schedule

Vaccinations commence at 10-12 weeks with boosters given following veterinary recommendations. Routine checks include dental care, parasite control, and regular weight monitoring to support joint health. Preventing heat stress is essential because of brachycephaly.

Insurance Considerations

Given the likelihood of hereditary conditions, comprehensive pet insurance is strongly recommended, with premiums reflecting breed-specific risks. Early and consistent veterinary care improves outcomes and cost management.

The Dogue de Bordeaux is one of France's most ancient native breeds, with origins tracing back several centuries. Historical records, including a 14th-century French hunting book, describe ancestors of the breed possessing tremendously strong bites, hinting at the Dogue’s deep-rooted history as a formidable working dog. The breed’s heritage is thought to include influences from English Bulldogs and Mastiffs brought to the Bordeaux region during English rule, as well as local hunting and cattle dogs, reflecting a complex genetic background.

Early Development

Early types of 'dogues' varied across France, including contenders like the Dogue de Paris and the Dogue de Toulouse. The Dogue de Bordeaux evolved from these regional types, bred particularly for hunting large game such as wild boar and guarding cattle and property in the Aquitaine region. These dogs were prized by French butchers for their guarding skills and physical prowess. Breed standards began to be formalised in the late 19th century, with the first shows in Paris recording the Dogue de Bordeaux by name in 1863. Significant breed standard revisions were undertaken throughout the 20th century, including important updates in 1896, 1910, 1971, and 1993, securing the breed’s modern appearance and traits.

Modern Recognition

Despite severe population declines caused by the disruptions of the World Wars, including targeted attempts at breed eradication during WWII, dedicated breeders such as Professor Raymond Triquet played a vital role in rescuing the Dogue de Bordeaux from near extinction. By the 1960s, concerted efforts revived the breed, shifting from a purely working molosser to a companion and guardian suited to modern families. The Dogue de Bordeaux gained official recognition by the UK's Kennel Club in 1997, and since then, its popularity has grown steadily across the UK and beyond.

The breed is now widely cherished for its unique combination of protective instincts, affectionate nature, and historical significance, continuing its rise as a popular choice for those seeking a loyal and impressive canine companion.

The Dogue de Bordeaux is a strikingly powerful and ancient French breed that commands attention with its broad massive head and muscular frame. Originally bred for hunting large game and guarding, this breed combines imposing presence with remarkable agility and surprising speed for its size. The Dogue de Bordeaux’s large stature and impressive strength mask a deeply affectionate and loyal temperament, making it an intriguing choice for experienced dog owners who can provide confident, consistent leadership.

Known for their distinctive loose skin and dramatic facial wrinkles, Dogues excel as protective family companions while maintaining a gentle and calm demeanour when properly socialised and trained. Their slow maturation process often means a puppy’s playful antics persist well into adulthood, demanding patience and clear guidance from owners to manage their substantial strength as they grow. This breed thrives in environments where they have ample space to move freely and require daily exercise to stay healthy and content.

The Dogue de Bordeaux suits owners familiar with large, robust breeds and who appreciate the responsibilities involved in caring for a guardian dog with a natural protective instinct. Their loyalty and bond to family members is intense, yet they need firm but nurturing leadership to balance their occasionally stubborn nature. Their drooling and potential for health challenges are important factors for consideration, necessitating a committed approach to grooming and veterinary care.

Overall, the Dogue de Bordeaux is a majestic yet affectionate breed requiring an owner ready to invest in early socialisation, consistent training, and a lifestyle accommodating a large, powerful dog with a loving heart and natural guarding propensity.

Perfect For

Experienced dog owners seeking a large, devoted guardian with calm, affectionate traits, homes with ample space for exercise, and families who understand the breed’s protective instincts and training needs.

Key Considerations

Requires firm, consistent leadership and early socialisation, prone to drooling, has specific health concerns associated with brachycephaly and large body size, and needs secure fencing due to impressive jumping ability.

Core Personality Traits

The Dogue de Bordeaux presents a unique blend of formidable presence and tender affection. Adults are fiercely loyal, protective, and form deep attachments to their family members. Despite their slow maturation, they retain a puppy-like playfulness into adulthood. Their calm demeanour can be overshadowed by stubbornness and a hint of pride if not trained and socialised consistently from puppyhood.

Social Behavior

This breed is naturally wary of strangers and functions effectively as a watchdog, alerting owners without excessive barking. Their protective nature can cause same-sex dog aggression if socialisation is lacking. Due to a high prey drive, Dogues are often incompatible with small animals unless introduced early in life under close supervision.

Working Instincts

Rooted in their history as hunters and guardians, these dogs have strong protective and guarding instincts that require sufficient mental and physical stimulation to prevent frustration and destructive behaviours. They are intelligent and loyal workers but need assertive, consistent training to channel natural dominance traits responsibly.

Common Behavioral Challenges

Owners may face challenges with stubbornness, over-protectiveness, and recall difficulties linked to high prey drive. Early socialisation and firm, ongoing training are essential to mitigate these risks. Without clear leadership, the breed can become dominant and difficult to control, posing safety hazards due to their size and strength.

The Dogue de Bordeaux is highly intelligent and quick to learn but equally quick to develop undesirable habits if not properly guided. Training should start early, ideally as soon as the puppy arrives home around eight weeks old, using calm, firm but gentle techniques. Clear, consistent rules help define the dog’s place in the household hierarchy.

Puppy Training Priorities

Focus on basic obedience commands such as sit, stay, come, quiet, leave it, down, and bed, which lay the foundation for control and good behaviour. Early and extensive socialisation is crucial to expose puppies to different people, animals, and environments to prevent fearfulness or aggression.

Training Methods That Work

Positive reinforcement works best, combining treats, praise, and play with short, frequent sessions to keep the Dogue’s attention. Physical guidance paired with verbal commands enhances learning. Calm behaviour should be reinforced to counteract any dominant tendencies, and boundaries must be firm but fair without harsh punishments to foster trust.

Advanced Training Potential

Beyond basic obedience, Dogues excel in mentally stimulating and physically challenging activities such as carting, rally obedience, and scent work. Their guarding instincts make them well-suited for responsible guard training, provided it adheres to ethical standards.

Common Training Mistakes

Inconsistent rules, harsh corrections, or neglecting early socialisation can lead to wilful and dominant behaviours. Over-exercising puppies risks joint damage; hence exercise must be moderate and appropriate to age.
