Size and Build

Lagotto Romagnolo males stand between 43 and 48 cm at the withers, weighing 13 to 16 kg, while females are slightly smaller at 41 to 46 cm and 11 to 14 kg. They possess a square, compact physique, with well-muscled shoulders and strong powerful limbs. Their bodies are athletic and sturdy, featuring a short, muscular neck and broad chest reaching the elbows, with slight tuck-up at the belly enhancing a streamlined silhouette.

Coat and Colours

The breed is renowned for its dense, woolly, and waterproof coat forming tight curls. The undercoat is soft and thick, visible beneath the outer curls. Coat curls vary by body region, being looser on the head, especially around pronounced eyebrows, whiskers, and beard areas. Accepted colours by the Kennel Club include solid brown, brown & white, brown roan, off-white, orange, orange & white, orange roan, and pure white. Dark or light brown masks are permissible. Pigmentation intensity varies from light to dark brown.

Distinctive Features

The Lagotto’s head is moderately broad with slightly convex skulls and clearly defined stops. Their strong muzzles are nearly as deep as they are long, with large noses featuring open nostrils suited to scent work. Eyes are large, well-set, and vary in colour from ochre and hazel to brown, often harmonising with coat colour, conveying alert intelligence. Ears are triangular with rounded tips, set slightly above eye level, hanging relaxed but raised when attentive. Their tails extend from the slightly sloped croup weighing down at rest but carried curved over the back when excited.

Gender Differences

Males tend to be larger and more robust, with slightly heavier bone structure. Temperamentally, males and females are similar, though females can occasionally be more reserved. Both genders share the breed's hallmark affectionate and energetic traits.

Gait/Movement

Lagottos move with a smooth, tireless, and free-flowing action, displaying strong drive from the hindquarters that underscores their athletic heritage and agility in water and land working roles.

Faults

The breed standard discourages exaggerations that may impair function or health. Males should have both testicles descended. Minor deviations in size or weight are tolerated but significant departures affecting performance or wellbeing are marked down.

Prospective owners looking for a Lagotto Romagnolo puppy should be prepared for a competitive market with limited availability. Due to the breed's rarity in the UK, prices for well-bred, Kennel Club registered puppies typically range between £1,500 and £2,000 when purchased from individual breeders. Limited litters annually mean that early registration of interest with reputable breeders is advised.

Initial setup costs include essentials such as quality grooming tools, durable leads and collars, a comfortable crate, bedding, and suitable feeding bowls, estimated at approximately £200 to £300. Puppies also require vaccinations, microchipping, and routine vet checks, which can amount to £150-£250 in the first year.

Ongoing monthly costs for a Lagotto Romagnolo average between £70 and £110. This includes premium food, routine vet visits, grooming appointments, pet insurance, and occasional training classes. Insurance premiums vary depending on coverage level and location, averaging around £25 for basic plans and up to £55 for comprehensive lifetime cover per month.

Overall, the lifetime cost of ownership can be considerable, factoring in health screening, emergency vet care, and professional grooming every 6-8 weeks. Prospective owners are encouraged to budget prudently and seek dogs from ethical breeders prioritising health and temperament.

To explore available puppies, you can find Lagotto Romagnolo for sale on Pets4Homes.

Lagotto Romagnolo puppies are rare and highly sought after in the UK, necessitating careful, informed purchasing to ensure health and ethical breeding standards. Prospective buyers should register interest early with reputable breeders known for transparent practices.

When visiting breeders, essential checks include meeting the puppy with its mother, verifying microchip and vaccination status, and reviewing all health clearances and pedigree documentation. Beware of scams, especially online offers with unusually low prices demanding upfront deposits without meeting the puppy in person.

Ethical breeders adhere to kennel club rules limiting breeding frequency and ages and offer contracts with health guarantees. Buyers should inquire about restrictions on breeding or exporting puppies, confirming these are clearly stated in contracts.

Adopting from breed-specific rescues can be considered as a responsible alternative, providing care for dogs in need without encouraging irresponsible breeding.

To find available puppies and reputable sellers, you can find Lagotto Romagnolo for sale on Pets4Homes.

Finding Ethical Breeders

Look for members of the UK Lagotto Romagnolo Association or the Lagotto Romagnolo Club of Great Britain, who support health testing and responsible breeding.

Health Testing Verification

Request proof of tests for juvenile epilepsy (JE), lysosomal storage disease (LSD), hip and elbow dysplasia, and eye examinations.

Puppy Selection Process

Choose puppies that are alert, sociable, and free from obvious health issues. Early temperament assessments help match the right puppy to the right owner.

Contract and Guarantee Review

Contracts should cover health guarantees, microchipping, and clear arrangements for returns or disputes.

Rescue and Adoption Options

Consider breed-specific rescues for Lagotto Romagnolos needing new homes, promoting ethical ownership and breed preservation.

Daily care for a Lagotto Romagnolo involves maintaining their coat health, providing consistent exercise, and ensuring nutritional and medical needs are met. Their curly, dense coat requires regular grooming to prevent mats and skin issues, with professional trims every 6 to 8 weeks recommended.

Daily Care Routine

A typical day might start with a moderate walk to expend some energy, followed by feeding with high-quality balanced food. Mental stimulation such as scent work or obedience training sessions should be included to engage this intelligent breed. Regular ear checks and cleaning help avoid infections due to dense ear hair.

Living Environment Needs

They adapt well to homes with secure, spacious gardens for safe off-lead play but can also thrive in apartments with sufficient daily physical and mental exercise. Hazard-proofing gardens is essential given their digging tendencies.

Seasonal Care Adjustments

In warmer months, provide shade and fresh water to manage heat due to their thick coat. During colder months, monitor for reduced activity or joint stiffness and adjust exercise accordingly.

Senior Care Adaptations

Older Lagottos benefit from softer bedding, adjusted diet to manage weight, and gentle, low-impact exercises. Supplements and veterinary check-ups support mobility and overall health as dogs age.

The Lagotto Romagnolo excels as a family dog, displaying a natural gentleness and patience ideal for interactions with children of all ages. They quickly bond with youngsters, enjoying playtime and actively engaging in family activities. Toddlers should always be supervised when near the dog to ensure safe, respectful interactions and to prevent overly boisterous play.

With proper socialisation from a young age, Lagottos generally get along well with other dogs and household pets. However, their high prey drive means caution should be exercised around smaller animals, especially unfamiliar cats and rodents.

Age-Specific Interactions

With toddlers, calm and controlled introductions help foster positive experiences. Lagottos are patient and tolerant with playful older children and teenagers, often delighting in interactive games. Their lively nature suits active families who can match the dog’s energy level.

Teaching Children Proper Interaction

Children should be taught to approach the dog gently without sudden movements or loud noises, respect the dog's rest spaces, and understand basic canine body language. Establishing boundaries helps prevent unintentional stress or fear responses.

Breed-Specific Considerations

Due to their size (medium, about 41-48 cm height) and activity level, children should be mindful not to overwhelm the dog. The Lagotto’s playful digging and mouthing behaviours require supervision during outdoor play.

Creating Safe Environments

Supervised play areas and safe escape zones where the dog can retreat contribute to a harmonious household. Educating families about separation anxiety tendencies ensures better care and management for the breed.

The Lagotto Romagnolo is a highly energetic and intelligent breed demanding substantial daily exercise to maintain physical health and mental wellbeing. Ideally, dogs should receive at least two hours of activity daily, including off-lead play in secure areas.

Daily Exercise Requirements

A short walk in the morning complemented by a longer, more stimulating walk or activity session in the afternoon fulfils their exercise needs. Opportunities to swim, retrieve, or engage in scent work satisfy their intrinsic instincts and prevent boredom.

Suitable Activities

Agility, obedience, truffle hunting, scent games, and fetch align well with their abilities and passions. Mental challenges such as puzzle toys and training games enhance their satisfaction and focus.

Exercise Restrictions

Avoid over-exercising puppies as their joints and bones develop; limit activities that involve jumping and stairs during early months. Adjust intensity and duration for senior dogs to prevent strain.

Mental Stimulation Ideas

Use scent trails, food puzzles, interactive games, and varied training routines to maintain engagement. Frequent changes in activities prevent monotony and encourage learning.

Feeding a Lagotto Romagnolo requires attention to nutritional balance for all life stages, supporting their active lifestyle and coat health. Puppies benefit from frequent, small meals, while adults thrive on balanced diets suited to their energy levels.

Nutritional Requirements

High-quality commercial or home-prepared diets with appropriate protein (around 22-26%) and moderate fat (10-15%) support growth and energy needs. Fibre content should be monitored to prevent digestive upset.

Feeding Schedule Guidelines

Puppies are best fed 3 to 4 times daily, tapering to twice daily meals for adults. Portions should be adjusted based on the dog’s weight, age, and activity, with guidance from vets or nutritionists.

Special Dietary Considerations

Some Lagottos may have food sensitivities or allergies; grain-free or limited ingredient diets can be explored if advised. Supplements like omega fatty acids promote coat health.

Weight Management

Maintaining ideal body condition is crucial to avoid obesity-related health issues. Regular weight tracking and exercise adjustment prevent overweight problems, especially post neutering or in senior dogs.

The Lagotto Romagnolo’s distinctive curly, dense coat is non-shedding but requires dedicated grooming to keep it healthy and manageable. Professional grooming every 6 to 8 weeks is essential to trim the coat, remove dead hairs, and maintain the characteristic curl and shape.

Coat Maintenance Schedule

Daily to weekly brushing with a slicker brush or comb prevents tangles and mats, particularly in the woolly undercoat. Face curls around eyebrows, whiskers, and beard require careful attention to prevent food residue build-up.

Professional Grooming Requirements

Trims shape the coat to breed standard, focusing on an even curl and cleanliness inside the ears and around the eyes. Groomers also remove excess hair from ear canals to prevent infections.

Home Grooming Techniques

Owners should regularly clean ears, brush teeth with dog-specific products, trim nails, and bathe the dog with gentle, breed-appropriate shampoo. Using grooming gloves and rounded scissors safely helps maintain facial hair between professional visits.

Common Grooming Challenges

Mats can quickly form in damp or neglected coats; prevention with regular brushing is key. Ear infections are a common issue due to hair and moisture, requiring vigilance. Seasonal shedding is minimal but some coat changes occur with maturity, requiring adjustments in grooming routines.

Lagotto Romagnolos generally enjoy a good lifespan of 12 to 14 years, often reaching 15 or more with proper care. Like all breeds, they are susceptible to several hereditary health issues which responsible breeders vigilantly screen for.

Breed-Specific Health Conditions

Key concerns include hip and elbow dysplasia, which can lead to joint pain and mobility issues. Annual or periodic screening through schemes such as the BVA/KC Hip and Elbow Dysplasia programmes is recommended. Hereditary cataracts may affect eye health, necessitating routine ophthalmic exams.

Neurological disorders, notably lysosomal storage disease and juvenile epilepsy, have been identified in the breed. Genetic testing for these conditions, available from specialist labs and encouraged by kennel clubs, is vital for breeding decisions. Dogs affected by these disorders exhibit symptoms from early puppyhood to adulthood, depending on the condition.

Other health issues documented in the breed include cerebellar anomaly, hypothyroidism, alopecia, and improper coat condition, each requiring veterinary diagnosis and management.

Genetic Testing Requirements

All Kennel Club Assured Breeders must perform and clear DNA testing for juvenile epilepsy (JE) before breeding. Additional recommended tests include screening for lysosomal storage disease (LSD), hip and elbow dysplasia, and hereditary cataracts through the BVA/KC Eye Scheme.

Preventive Healthcare Schedule

Vaccination schedules begin at 10-12 weeks of age, with boosters timed according to veterinary guidance. Spaying and neutering are generally advised after six months of age but should be discussed with the vet on a case-by-case basis.

Insurance Considerations

Health insurance premiums reflect common claims involving joint issues and neurological disorders, so coverage is advisable. Responsible owners should consider lifetime policies to manage long-term health costs efficiently.

The Lagotto Romagnolo is an ancient water retriever breed from the marshlands of Romagna, Italy, with origins dating back centuries, recorded in art from the 1400s. Its name derives from "Lagotto," meaning "duck dog" in regional dialect, reflecting its original purpose retrieving waterfowl. Historically, similar dogs served as hunting companions as early as the Etruscan period, around the 7th century BC.

In the late 19th century, as duck populations declined, the breed flexibly transitioned to truffle hunting, capitalising on its powerful scenting abilities. The core breeding grounds were lowland wetlands near Comacchio and Ravenna, where the breed was prized for both fieldwork and companionship.

Early Development

Historically crossed with other dogs, pure lines risked extinction by the 19th century, with fewer than a dozen pure Lagottos remaining early in the 1800s. Enthusiasts and vets dedicated to preserving the breed successfully revived the population. The breed remained largely localized in Italy for many years.

Modern Recognition

Official recognition by the Italian Kennel Club came in 1993, followed by increasing international interest including in the UK beginning in the late 1990s. Foundation stock was imported into the UK circa 1997 by early breeders Ann Kemp and Gael Stenton. Despite growing awareness globally, the breed remains relatively rare in the UK, with limited annual KC registrations. Enthusiasts are encouraged to register interest early due to demand exceeding supply.

The Lagotto Romagnolo is a distinctive and versatile breed originating from Italy, famed for its keen scenting ability and woolly, hypoallergenic coat. Historically bred for retrieving game both on land and in water, today it excels as a truffle hunting dog and a devoted companion. Its compact, robust build paired with an expressive, curly coat lends the Lagotto a unique appearance that is both charming and practical.

Lagottos exhibit intelligence, endurance, and a friendly disposition, making them suitable for active owners who appreciate an energetic and alert canine. They thrive in environments where they can indulge their natural instincts through regular exercise and mental stimulation. This breed combines working dog heritage with affectionate family companionship, adapting well from rural to urban homes provided their needs are met.

Ideal for experienced owners or those ready to invest time in training, the Lagotto is highly trainable but requires consistent handling and socialisation. Their affectionate nature and compatibility with children make them excellent family pets, although prospective owners should be mindful of their prey drive and need for companionship to avoid behavioural issues.

Care demands include specialised grooming to maintain their dense curly coat, regular exercise to satisfy their high energy levels, and health monitoring supported by specific genetic testing. Understanding these facets ensures a happy, healthy Lagotto that enriches family life and social engagement.

Perfect For

Active individuals or families seeking a devoted, intelligent dog with moderate size and hypoallergenic qualities. Owners who value training, mental challenge, and outdoor activities such as scent work or agility.

Key Considerations

Requires regular professional grooming; needs substantial daily exercise and mental stimulation; predisposed to separation anxiety; high prey drive necessitates firm recall training and secure outdoor space.

The Lagotto Romagnolo is a spirited working breed celebrated for its affectionate nature and loyalty within family environments. They thrive when given ample physical exercise and enriching mental challenges, remaining active and engaged companions. Their temperament is characterised by gentleness and friendliness, especially notable with children, making them excellent family dogs.

They suit active owners who enjoy outdoor pursuits, as Lagottos possess high energy and require daily stimulation to prevent boredom-related behaviours. Their strong prey drive and sharp senses mean they must be carefully supervised when off lead, especially near wildlife or livestock. They are mischievous and playful, often using their intelligence to entertain themselves, which can include digging in gardens.

Lagottos form profound bonds with their owners, displaying separation anxiety if left alone for lengthy periods. They are not overly vocal but can alert bark if strangers approach, making them effective watchdogs without being yappy. This breed’s adaptability allows living comfortably in apartments or countryside homes when provided enough exercise.

Core Personality Traits

Intelligent, loyal, alert, affectionate, playful, and social.

Social Behaviour

Generally friendly with children and family; cautious but not aggressive towards strangers; usually good with other dogs when socialised early; may chase unfamiliar cats or small animals.

Working Instincts

Highly driven truffle hunters, strong scenting ability, natural retrievers, love water and digging.

Common Behavioural Challenges

Separation anxiety if left alone; tendency to dig in gardens; requires secure fencing and firm recall training due to prey drive.

The Lagotto Romagnolo is an intelligent and eager-to-please breed that reflects its working dog heritage in its responsiveness to training. Provided the right environment, they learn quickly and enjoy focused one-to-one attention, particularly when training involves varied and stimulating tasks.

Puppy Training Priorities
Early socialisation is essential, exposing puppies to diverse people, animals, and environments to develop confidence. Basic obedience commands such as come, sit, stay, heel, quiet, leave it, down, and bed should be introduced soon after vaccination completion. Positive reinforcement methods—using treats, praise, and play—are highly effective, especially if training sessions remain brief and engaging.

Training Methods That Work
Short sessions lasting 10 to 15 minutes with varied exercises maintain the dog's focus and enthusiasm. Leveraging their natural retrieving instincts makes training enjoyable. Consistency and patience build clear boundaries and clear communication, preventing confusion and behavioural issues.

Advanced Training Potential
Due to their scenting skill and agility, Lagottos excel in activities like scent work, agility competitions, obedience trials, and even truffle hunting. These activities provide both mental and physical outlets, tapping into their innate abilities.

Common Training Mistakes
Failing to socialise early, allowing repetitive, long, or monotonous sessions, and neglecting motivation can lead to distraction or stubbornness. Overindulgence during puppyhood may produce spoiled behaviours. It is vital to set boundaries early to guide the dog's development.
