Working

Size and Build

Newfoundlands are a giant breed, with males typically standing between 70 and 75 cm tall at the withers and weighing 65 to 70 kg. Females are slightly smaller, with heights ranging from 65 to 68 cm and weights between 52 and 56 kg. The breed displays a well-balanced, sturdy physique that combines power with grace. Their strong, muscular frame features a broad chest, well-developed ribs, and robust hindquarters designed to support both strength and endurance necessary for water work.

Coat and Colours

The coat is dense and double-layered, comprising a coarse, oily, water-resistant outer layer and a soft, thick undercoat. This double coat protects Newfoundlands from cold water and harsh weather but necessitates frequent grooming to prevent mats and skin problems. Recognised colours under the Kennel Club breed standard include solid black, black and white, brown, brown and white, grey, the Landseer variety (white with black markings), and other accepted white and black variations.

Distinctive Features

The head is broad and large with a well-defined occipital bone but no pronounced stop. The square muzzle is relatively short and covered with fine, short hair. Newfoundlands possess wide-set, small dark brown eyes that convey a gentle and intelligent expression. Their ears are small, set back, and lie close to the head, complementing the breed’s calm appearance. Their large, webbed feet are a hallmark feature enabling superb swimming ability. The tail is thick and fairly long, hanging low when at rest but raised slightly or carried straight with a curved tip during movement. Their gait is distinctive, characterised by a rolling, free, and effortless movement, with occasional toewalking considered acceptable in the breed standard.

Gender Differences

Males tend to be taller and heavier, reflecting their role as the more robust working dogs. Both sexes share the breed’s gentle and patient temperament, although males may exhibit slightly greater protectiveness. In show rings, female conformation undergoes closer scrutiny to ensure adherence to breed standards, and any size or proportion faults are only tolerated within definite limits.

Purchasing a well-bred Newfoundland for sale on Pets4Homes generally ranges from to to to £2,000 depending on breeder type, pedigree quality, and lineage. Prices vary regionally with southern England tending to command higher amounts. Show-quality dogs typically cost more than pet-quality counterparts.

Purchase Prices

Individual breeders list Newfoundlands for around £1,000 to £2,000. Pricing reflects breeding quality, parent health testing, and colour variations, with demand influencing seasonal price shifts.

Initial Setup Costs

Essentials such as high-quality feeding bowls, grooming tools, sturdy bedding, and travel crates can cost between £200 and £400. Puppy-proofing equipment including gates and playpens add to initial expenses.

Ongoing Monthly Expenses

Feeding a Newfoundland involves £70 to £100 monthly based on diet quality and portion size. Grooming supplies and professional grooming visits, alongside routine veterinary care including vaccinations and parasite prevention, commonly amount to £140 to £220 monthly.

Lifetime Cost Considerations

Insurance premiums average between £59 and £107 per month depending on coverage. Owners should budget for potential hereditary condition treatments, increased vet appointments in senior years, plus occasional professional training or boarding.

When searching to find Newfoundland puppies for sale, prospective owners should prioritise ethical breeders committed to health testing and responsible breeding practices. Visiting breeders in person to meet puppies and their dams ensures transparency and well-being.

Finding Ethical Breeders

Look for Kennel Club Assured Breeders who adhere to strict health screening protocols and breeding limitations, such as controlled litter numbers and age constraints for dams. Transparency in lineage and breeding history is essential.

Health Testing Verification

Ensure breeders provide valid certificates for hip and elbow dysplasia, cystinuria DNA tests, and participation in breed club heart screening schemes. Confirming health clearances through official databases reduces risk.

Puppy Selection Process

Evaluate puppies for confident and friendly temperaments, thorough socialisation, and health as verified by independent vets. Avoid puppies showing signs of illness or behavioural issues.

Contract and Guarantee Review

Review contracts carefully covering health guarantees, return policies, and breeder support commitments. Be cautious of sellers unwilling to share documentation or who prohibit home visits.

Rescue and Adoption Options

Consider breed-specific rescues for Newfoundlands, which offer rehoming opportunities and expert guidance. Adoption supports breed welfare and can be a rewarding alternative to purchasing.

Newfoundlands require meticulous daily care to maintain optimal health and wellbeing. Their coat needs daily brushing to prevent mats and skin infections, while regular ear inspections and cleaning are vital to prevent otitis due to wax build-up. Their dense, oily double coat provides water resistance but demands attentive upkeep.

Daily Care Routine

A typical day involves two moderate-length walks during cooler parts of the day, balanced feeding adjusted for life stage, garden play for physical and mental stimulation, and regular interaction to meet their social needs. Portion control is essential due to their predisposition to obesity, especially following neutering or with advancing age.

Living Environment Needs

The breed thrives best in homes with large, secure gardens where it can exercise and explore safely. Apartment or flat living is unsuitable. Their coat demands cool shaded areas and avoidance of heat exposure to prevent overheating. Climate suitability is a key factor in their wellbeing.

Seasonal Care Adjustments

Summer months require avoidance of exercise during peak heat, with increased grooming to manage shedding. In winter, providing shelter from cold and monitoring joint health is important, particularly for senior dogs. Adaptations may include additional bedding and gentle mobility support.

Senior Care Adaptations

Older Newfoundlands benefit from soft, supportive bedding, mobility assistance where arthritis is present, senior-specific diet formulations, and regular veterinary monitoring to maintain quality of life during aging.

Known as the quintessential ‘nanny dog,’ the Newfoundland stands out for its remarkable patience, gentleness, and protective disposition towards children. It forms deep affectionate bonds with family members of all ages, making it a superb choice for families with children.

Age-Specific Interactions

With toddlers and very young children, strict supervision during playtime is critical to prevent accidental knocks or injuries, given the dog’s large stature and strength. Older children and teenagers can engage in more active, interactive play while learning to respect the dog’s space and signals.

Teaching Children Proper Interaction

Families should educate children on calm and gentle interaction, including respecting the dog when resting and not pulling ears or tail. Clear boundaries help foster mutual trust and safety for both dog and child.

Breed-Specific Considerations

Due to their size and strength, Newfoundlands require balance between energetic activities and rest periods to manage energy levels appropriately. Care should be taken around smaller pets in the household due to the Newfoundland's mass and power, even if they are raised together.

Creating Safe Environments

Managing safe family environments by providing gated areas or crates where the dog can retreat supports stress-free interactions and offers privacy. Continuous supervision is advised during child-dog interactions to ensure positive experiences for all.

Newfoundlands require moderate to high daily exercise tailored to their age and health. Adults benefit from at least 60 minutes of activity daily, which should be adjusted to maintain fitness without stressing joints or risking heat exhaustion.

Daily Exercise Requirements

Typical routines include two walks during the cooler parts of the day, supplemented by playtime in a secure garden and supervised swimming when available. Puppies require careful moderation of exercise to protect developing joints, with restrictions on jumping and stair climbing.

Suitable Activities

Swimming is particularly beneficial for muscle strength and joint health, supporting the breed's innate aquatic abilities. Other suitable activities are walking, gentle fetch games, and obedience exercise that also provides mental stimulation.

Exercise Restrictions

Puppies and young dogs should avoid excessive high-impact activities and strenuous exercise. Hot weather demands careful scheduling to avoid overheating due to their dense coats.

Mental Stimulation Ideas

Providing puzzle toys, interactive obedience training, and enrichment games are crucial to engage Newfoundlands mentally and prevent boredom-related behavioural issues.

Nutrition is fundamental to the health and longevity of Newfoundlands, given their size and activity demands. Diet should focus on supporting healthy bone and joint development in puppies and maintaining weight control in adults.

Nutritional Requirements

Adult Newfoundlands require balanced diets containing approximately 18-22% protein and 10-15% fat, with adequate fibre to support digestion. Caloric intake should be tailored to age, weight, and activity level to prevent obesity.

Feeding Schedule Guidelines

Puppies need three to four smaller meals daily, tapering to two meals per day for adults. Portion sizes should be carefully controlled based on body condition, with healthy treats given sparingly.

Special Dietary Considerations

Some Newfoundlands may have food sensitivities or allergies; supplements such as glucosamine and chondroitin often support joint health. Veterinary advice is recommended when introducing dietary changes or supplements.

Weight Management

Due to their susceptibility to obesity, regular monitoring of body condition and calorie intake is critical. Maintaining an ideal weight helps reduce stress on joints and prevents related health problems.

Due to their thick, oily double coat, Newfoundlands require a high level of grooming dedication akin to professional standards. Their coats are designed for aquatic work, drying quickly and repelling water effectively.

Coat Maintenance Schedule

Daily brushing with slicker or pin brushes is essential to prevent tangles and mats, with special attention to feathered areas on the legs. Twice-yearly professional grooming baths help maintain skin and coat health, especially following swimming or seasonal heavy shedding.

Professional Grooming Requirements

Professional grooming twice a year is recommended and includes thorough bathing, drying, ear cleaning, and nail trimming. Their size can make bathing at home challenging, so many owners prefer professional services for optimal care.

Home Grooming Techniques

Investing in quality grooming tools such as grooming gloves, slicker brushes, and dog-specific shampoos is vital. Regular ear inspections and nail trimming support overall hygiene and comfort.

Common Grooming Challenges

Key challenges include preventing mats in feathered areas, managing seasonal heavy shedding, and maintaining skin health to avoid infections. Consistent grooming prevents painful issues and keeps the coat in premium condition.

Newfoundlands have an average lifespan of 12 to 14 years when well cared for, slightly above the typical range for giant breeds. Their health management warrants vigilant care due to susceptibility to several hereditary and acquired conditions that can affect longevity and quality of life.

Breed-Specific Health Conditions

Common issues include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, cystinuria (a hereditary kidney disorder), subvalvular aortic stenosis (SAS), ciliary dyskinesia, and various eye diseases. SAS is especially serious, causing heart muscle thickening and potentially sudden death. Symptoms vary and typically require ongoing monitoring and grading of heart murmurs.

Genetic Testing Requirements

Responsible breeders participate in DNA testing for cystinuria and engage in the BVA/KC Hip and Elbow Dysplasia schemes, alongside breed-specific heart screening programmes. Comprehensive testing helps reduce the incidence of these debilitating conditions through informed breeding decisions.

Preventive Healthcare Schedule

Vaccination protocols commence at 10-12 weeks with booster rounds per veterinary guidance. Routine health examinations, weight control to limit obesity, and parasite prevention are essential. Regular screening for hereditary conditions is advisable, particularly in adult and senior dogs.

Insurance Considerations

Given the breed’s medical predispositions, comprehensive pet insurance covering hereditary diseases, surgical interventions, and chronic condition management is highly recommended. Coverage plans should be evaluated carefully to match the Newfoundland’s specific health risks and lifestyle needs.

The Newfoundland breed has roots extending back to the 16th century, originating on the rugged coasts of Newfoundland, Canada. Early ancestors included the native St John's Dogs, also known as Lesser Newfoundland dogs, and were crossbred with large European working breeds such as the Saint Bernard and English Mastiff. This crossbreeding aimed to enhance the dogs' size, swimming ability, and endurance to suit the demanding fishing environment of the time.

Early Development

Two distinct sizes of native fishery dogs were initially recognised: the Greater Newfoundland and the Lesser Newfoundland, or St John's Dogs. The Greater Newfoundland was bred for arduous tasks such as hauling heavy fishing gear and working in water rescue. Early breeders, including Portuguese fishermen in the 1500s, refined the breed’s water-resistant coat and webbed feet, optimising its utility for coastal labour. The breed was prized for its strength, endurance, and loyalty among the fishing communities.

Modern Recognition

Newfoundlands gained international acclaim during the 19th century for their ability in water rescue and as dependable working dogs. The Newfoundland Club of the UK, established in 1886—the oldest breed club in Britain—played a key role in standardising the breed’s features. Though their popularity fluctuated during the World Wars, the breed experienced a resurgence in the mid-20th century, firmly establishing itself as a sought-after family companion and therapy dog. Their revered reputation as "nanny dogs" and lifesavers in water rescue has cemented their cultural significance and enduring appeal worldwide.

The Newfoundland is a magnificent gentle giant, celebrated for its unique combination of impressive size and extraordinary kindness. Originally bred as a powerful working dog for water rescue and fishing tasks, it combines immense strength with a calm, patient temperament, making it an exceptional family companion. These dogs are renowned for their natural affinity with children, engaging warmly and gently in interactive play. Newfoundlands' sturdy build, thick water-resistant double coats, and webbed feet highlight their outstanding swimming capabilities, which remain a defining characteristic to this day.

Physically robust and temperamentally loyal, Newfoundlands thrive best in households where a secure, spacious garden is available, along with owners who can dedicate time to consistent exercise and grooming. Their temperament suits experienced owners who understand the responsibilities of managing a large canine breed and can provide patient, consistent training along with early socialisation. These dogs flourish in calm, steady routines and appreciate a family environment in which they are seldom left alone to prevent separation anxiety.

Care requirements include daily moderate exercise to maintain fitness without overexertion, particularly avoiding heat stress due to their dense coats. Their grooming demands involve regular daily brushing to prevent mats and skin issues, emphasizing a commitment to coat maintenance. Overall, the Newfoundland balances impressive working traits with an affectionate, easygoing nature, making it a rewarding but serious commitment for knowledgeable dog owners.

Perfect For

Active families with ample outdoor space seeking a calm, patient companion; owners experienced with large breeds who can manage their exercise, grooming, and training needs; households with children desiring a gentle, protective family dog.

Key Considerations

The breed requires significant daily grooming and dedicated exercise; unsuited to apartment or flat living and hot climates; prone to drooling and musky odour; needs early socialisation for balanced behaviour; higher maintenance costs due to size and health needs.

Newfoundlands are celebrated for their exceptional gentleness, calmness, and affectionate nature. They require owners who are experienced and confident in handling large, intelligent dogs, as their size and strength demand responsible leadership and consistent, kind training. These dogs are sensitive animals, responding best to positive reinforcement methods and gentle correction without harshness.

The breed thrives with thorough early socialisation, encountering a range of people, other dogs, and animals to develop balance and confidence. Their innate patience and gentle nature make them outstanding with children, though supervision is necessary due to their large size to prevent accidental injury. Their moderate prey drive typically results in amiable relations with other dogs and household pets when raised together from puppyhood.

Newfoundlands form strong bonds with their families, showing loyalty and protective instincts without any aggressive tendencies. They are known to drool and have a musky odour, aspects prospective owners must be prepared to accept. Separation anxiety may occur if left alone for extended periods, so these dogs do best in homes where someone is often present. Barking is generally infrequent, mainly confined to alerting visitors rather than persistent vocalisation.

While generally calm, Newfoundlands show a playful side that emerges with gentle and deliberate interaction. The breed has limited tolerance for warm climates due to their dense coat, favouring cooler environments. Overall, they are noble, reliable, and trustworthy companions, excelling in family life when their physical and emotional needs are comprehensively met.

Newfoundlands demonstrate high intelligence and a willingness to learn, flourishing under gentle, consistent training approaches. Early socialisation and structured education starting in puppyhood are vital for nurturing balanced, well-mannered adult dogs. Harsh discipline is counterproductive; positive reinforcement using treats and calm communication is the most effective training modality.

Puppy Training Priorities

During the critical first six months, priorities include socialising puppies to diverse environments, people, and animals. Basic obedience commands such as come, sit, stay, quiet, leave it, down, and bed should be introduced promptly to develop reliability and structure. Mental enrichment is essential to prevent boredom-associated destructive behaviours, particularly in a large breed.

Training Methods That Work

Training is most successful when consistent, reward-based techniques are applied, including treats and praise to encourage cooperation and eagerness. Short, frequent sessions help maintain focused attention. Utilising varied settings for commands supports social confidence and command generalisation. Harsh punishment or intimidation should be strictly avoided to preserve the dog’s trust and eagerness.

Advanced Training Potential

Newfoundlands excel in specialized fields such as water rescue, obedience competitions, and therapy work. Their natural swimming aptitude and calm temperament make them ideal candidates for community events and working roles that build on their instincts.

Common Training Mistakes

Common pitfalls include neglecting early socialisation, inconsistent enforcement of behaviour boundaries, and insufficient mental stimulation, which can lead to behavioural issues. Owners should avoid harsh corrections and provide clear, patient leadership to foster positive outcomes.
