The Portuguese Water Dog, also known as Portie, PWD, Water Dog, is a striking looking dog that, as its name suggests, loves to be in and around water. They have webbed feet, which means they are extremely strong swimmers. They also boast that their fur does not shed and their hind legs and tails are shorn short, adding to their unusual and charming appearance. Although a relative newcomer to the UK, the Portuguese Water Dog is still very popular in Portugal, especially with anglers, although they are also known to make good companions and family pets.

Portuguese Water Dogs can make excellent house dogs for owners who can meet their specific needs. They are highly intelligent, loyal, and active, bonding closely with their family and usually getting along well with children and other pets. However, they can be reserved around strangers and have a strong retrieving instinct that may lead to tugging and chewing if bored. They require ample exercise, mental stimulation, consistent training, and early socialisation to prevent destructive behaviours and ensure they are well-adjusted.
