Description

Eugene will need an adult only home who are willing to train him for the ongoing future. He has a bite history. Eugene is a 4 year old Puggle (Beagle cross Pug - he is 3/4 Beagle so has a good snout 🙂). He has been with us since he was born on 24/01/22. He’s always been to the vet regularly and had all his immunisations which are up to date along with regular flea/worm meds. He has no health conditions. He’s always lived with children and is good with other older dogs but a bit grumpy/snappy with puppies. He’s never been tested with other pets. He is generally calm and loving and very happy with company and lots of fuss but is ok to be left for periods if needed. I WFH at the moment so he is used to lots of company. He’s also used to being alone when needed. He initially had lots of issues with resource guarding and has now got to the point where he will exchange things he is very attached to for a treat and will give up other things freely. He is very food orientated and this is usually what he won’t give up! He can’t be around food/people eating if the food is accessible without trying to take it. He walks great and has worked on his recall and apart from the very occasional chasing a rabbit he will always come back. He can occasionally be spooked by a runner or bike and will bark/growl. He loves lots of walks and being free off the lead. Otherwise during the day he loves to snooze on the sofa. He is not keen on the postman and our garden faces outwards so I wouldn’t let him out if a stranger was likely to walk in the garden as I am unsure if he would tolerate this without aggression. He is able to respond well to sit and stay comands and has been able to work up to leaving food/something he wants when it’s first given till allowed. Unfortunately he does have a bite history and this is partly the reason for rehoming. He is triggered either by food or items being taken from him or being asked to do tasks he wishes not to such as get off the sofa at night. With regards to his bite history he has bitten once when around 1 years old and my mother in law was taking a butter packet he had stolen off him. (She is not used to dogs and didn’t realise this would be the worst thing to do) he also bit a friend recently when being asked to come down off thier bed (whilst he was being looked after by them). He does not like coming off the sofa at night and responds well to being called with a treat or being calmly called into the kitchen. He recently had an episode of barking and chasing me when I asked him to get off the sofa. I’m unsure if he would have bitten me but at the time it felt like that was the case and I held his collar until he calmed down. He usually growls and shows signs he doesn’t want to part with something or when being asked to do something he doesn’t want to! This makes it easier to create space and give instruction using treats. He also does not like to be approached/touched unexpectedly from behind. Generally if you know his triggers and how to handle him day to day isn’t an issue and he is lovely to be around. He just has this element of being unpredictable. Unfortunately as my two children are getting bigger and starting to try to move him about and tell him what to do I’m concerned about his occasional unpredictability and the fact that there are a lot of rules for them to remember with how to handle him and what to eat/do around him. I no longer feel confident when he takes food to swap with him, although this had been going well. I believe Eugene needs an adult only home who can seriously commit to training him formally and continuing that his whole life. If I didn’t have children this would be what I would do myself. If you feel you could support Eugene and have experience with dogs with behavioural issues I would love to discuss further with you and fill in the whole story as it’s difficult to do in writing. Please only contact me if you are willing to complete this training and are an adult only home. Advert price is only due to a minimum imposed and the reason for rehoming him is not financial.
