Rehoming Coby – North Northamptonshire Age: 3½ years Breed: Miniature Dachshund (pedigree - Kennel Club) Hello all. This is a post I never imagined writing, and it comes with a great deal of sadness. After much thought, we’ve made the very difficult decision to rehome our miniature dachshund, Coby. We want to be completely transparent about both his lovely qualities and the challenges that mean he needs a different kind of home. ❤️ A little about Coby Coby is a deeply affectionate dog who forms very strong attachments, especially with me as his main person. He has been with us since 8 weeks old and has been toilet trained from a young age. He knows “sit” and “wait,” and he spends most of his day happily curled up beside me, snoozing, or playing with his toys. He is low‑maintenance with exercise — he enjoys a walk, but he’s equally content pottering around the garden. His favourite thing in the world is cuddling up on someone’s lap and feeling close to his person. ⚠️ The challenges Coby has always been an attached and somewhat territorial dog, and these behaviours have increased since we introduced a Labrador puppy into the home. He can growl when he feels unsure, when being picked up, or when he thinks he’s about to be asked to do something he doesn’t want to do. He has never bitten, but he does communicate through growling when uncomfortable and has looked at times as if he will bite, but has not done so. Since the second dog arrived, Coby has begun marking in the house and has shown territorial behaviour towards our Labrador. He also struggles around my autistic son, preferring to stay close to me and avoiding interaction with him. Managing two dogs with these dynamics has become overwhelming for my son, and Coby is clearly unhappy sharing his space and person. He does not chew furniture (this stopped long ago), though he will occasionally chew toys. 🏡 The home he needs This decision has been incredibly hard — we’ve loved him for nearly 3½ years — but we have to prioritise everyone’s wellbeing, including Coby’s. Coby needs: * A home with no other dogs * Ideally no children, or older children who understand dog boundaries * Someone with strong dog experience, preferably familiar with dachshunds and their territorial tendencies * A person who can give him the time, patience, structure, and affection he thrives on our priority is finding someone who can truly meet his needs, rather than price alone. 🌱 How he adapts to new people Coby has stayed with unfamiliar people before while we were on holiday. He did growl for the first few days (up to a week), but with time he became more settled, tolerated the new environment, and eventually allowed others to stroke him. He can adapt — he just needs patience and someone who understands his temperament. Many thanks for reading and please let me know if you have any questions at all.
