This is one of the hardest things I have ever had to write.
Dougie is my absolute world, and I genuinely cannot put into words how much I love this dog.
I rescued Dougie in June 2025. He was everything I had been looking for. I live in South Wales, but travelled all the way to North Wales to bring him home because he needed a home, and my family and I wanted to give him the loving, forever home he deserved.
Dougie will be 3 years old in mid-September. He is an American Show Cocker Spaniel and, in so many ways, he is an absolutely outstanding dog.
He is incredibly clever. With a treat in your hand, he'll give you both paws, sit, lie down, turn around and pretty much do whatever you ask of him. He is fully toilet trained, extremely clean around the house and has always lived indoors. He's not a greedy dog, although he certainly loves his water!
From the very first night I brought him home, Dougie has slept by my side every single night. He has been my shadow and my best mate. The bond and love I have for this boy is incredible, and my wife and son absolutely adore him too.
Unfortunately, this is where the heartbreaking part comes in.
Whatever happened in Dougie's life before he came to us appears to have left him with some serious behavioural issues. I want to be completely open and honest about this because finding the right home for Dougie is far more important to me than simply finding a home.
Sadly, Dougie has attacked my 17-year-old daughter. She has reached the point where she feels like a prisoner in her own home, and as a dad I simply cannot allow the situation to continue.
I haven't taken this decision lightly. I have had dog behaviour professionals come to our home, Dougie has been checked by a vet and we have also tried chemical castration. Unfortunately, despite everything we've tried, the problem remains.
If it were just me and my wife, I would keep Dougie for the rest of his life without hesitation. But sadly, that isn't our situation.
Rehoming him is going to absolutely break my heart, but Dougie deserves the opportunity to live a happy life in an environment that suits him.
The home Dougie needs:
• An adult-only, child-free home
• A quiet, calm environment
• No other animals — Dougie needs to be the only pet
• Ideally someone retired, home often or with plenty of time for him
• A secure garden
• Somewhere with access to lovely, peaceful walks
• A home without lots of different visitors coming and going
• Someone experienced and confident with dogs who understands territorial/reactive behaviour
Dougie can be very territorial about his home and does not like postmen or unfamiliar people approaching his space, so his new owner needs to fully understand this and be prepared to manage it responsibly.
Please do not contact me if Dougie would be left living outside or put into a kennel. That's not the life I want for him. He has always been an indoor family dog, and I will only let him go to somebody I genuinely believe can give him the life he deserves.
There is absolutely no rush to simply get rid of him. I will wait for the right person and the right home.
I know Dougie isn't going to be the right dog for everybody. But I believe that in the right environment, with the right experienced person, this beautiful boy can have the life he deserves.
Letting him go will absolutely break my heart. I love him more than I could ever explain, but sometimes loving an animal means making an incredibly painful decision because you know your current home is no longer the right environment for them.
If you genuinely believe you can offer Dougie the safe, calm and loving forever home he needs, please get in touch and tell me a little about yourself, your home, your experience with dogs and the life you could offer him.
Only the right home will do for my boy. ❤️🐾
