Description
Albus is our lovely cavapoo who is almost 6 years old. We’ve adored having him in our family, but unfortunately, are in a position where we need to re-home him due to now having a toddler and requiring more flexibility with our lifestyle.
We are not looking to sell him, rather are looking for someone who is able to adopt him so please disregard the £75 price.
Albus is an incredibly friendly and social dog - he gets along well with most other dogs and he loves people. We’re able to keep him off the lead in most parks since he mostly just likes to sniff and will say a polite hello to other dogs, but continues wandering on his own. His recall is very good so he’ll come back to you and knows how to “wait” very well.
He’s extremely well behaved in public - we take him everywhere! He is very accustomed to traveling on the tube, buses and cars. We take him to any and all establishments that accept dogs so he’s lovely company at the pub, coffee shops and has come shopping with us many times. He mostly sits or sleeps next to you and is no trouble at all.
Once Albus gets to know you, he is a very affectionate and sweet dog. He loves to cuddle and be lazy on the sofa and he loves us fiercely.
His main issue and the reason why we’ve made the difficult decision to rehome him is a result of his separation anxiety. Albus cannot be left on his own for any period of time. We got him in the height of COVID so has always been used to having us around and unfortunately, the anxiety has not gone away.
We have tried separation anxiety training via the Julie Naismith method (though all behavioral therapists follow the same training approach) and it does work. Albus is a very smart dog and learns quickly, however, the training requires a great deal of time and patience to manage. It is constant and ongoing with any breaks leading to potential regression and in the meantime, he cannot be left on his own. This is detrimental to the training being effective as his anxiety only increases if he grows to associate you leaving with trauma. The method is very gentle and requires you leaving him for seconds at a time until you slowly build up to more time, always training below his anxiety threshold.
We have grown to rely heavily on sitters to support us through this so we never leave him alone. The silver lining here is that Albus is really great with other people. He is happy to be with anyone, as long as he’s not alone! We get rave reviews from all the sitters we use since he’s great company. He adapts to your mood so is very happy to have a sleepy day indoors if it’s raining, but equally loves the park and will happily be out for hours as well.
We are looking for a loving and kind home for Albus, someone who understands separation anxiety and has the time and patience to train him out of it. Ideally, a 2 person household since we appreciate having a dog with separation anxiety is challenging for a single person household to manage with basic chores like going to the grocery store.
We would only give him away to someone who understands his needs and is willing to accept the responsibility of being with him 24-7 while he is trained to ensure his anxiety does not get worse. As mentioned above, the training does work, but we now have a toddler and unfortunately are not in a position where we can take this on anymore.
We are happy to work on an appropriate transition phase with the right person, perhaps initially just doing daycare / boarding for us so you get to know Albus and see if it is a right fit and slowly taking him for longer periods of time. If this approach doesn’t work for you, happy to discuss, but at the very least, we’d like to meet any potential people first and both decide on what works best for everyone involved.
Please let us know if you have any questions and happy to jump on a call to discuss further or engage over email / text.
The priority is finding the right home for Albus so we are flexible with timings as we appreciate it’s a big responsibility to take on and will work with the right person to make it work.
Albus is not neutered. He has regular vet visits and has not had any serious medical issues outside of the occasional ear infection / hot spots. He’s had teeth cleaning done under anasthesia. He’s generally very healthy.
We are located in West London.
