Description
You will receive 30 eggs of Lopaphus sphalerus. This attractive species is fairly new to culture and is rarely available. Eggs have been laid in May and June, with an approximate incubation period of 4-6 months at 18-23C. Nymphs grow quickly and will reach adulthood in roughly 3 months, depending on temperatures.
Food plants: bramble, rose, hypericum, oak, hazel, and likely more. Hypericum is a favourite. Moderate-high humidity (70-75% RH as nymphs, no lower than 60% as adults), usual temperatures at 18-23C. Minimum enclosure size for adults is 45x30x30cm, with larger being better.
A moderately-sized, graceful species with long, slim legs and antennae. They are very sexually dimorphic, with males built delicately with metallic blue, green and gold colouration, and females much larger, chunkier and green or brown with mottled wing exteriors. Both sexes are winged as adults, though are only able to use them to glide or ‘flutter’ when disturbed - and they’re disturbed easily!
Care should be taken when handling to avoid startling them into dropping legs defensively (though I’ve not yet had this issue myself, I know their relatives L. sp. ‘Cuc Phuong’ are prone to this and suspect these are similar). Older nymphs and adults can behave frantically when alarmed, but no other defensive strategies have been observed.
Eggs will be sent via Royal Mail First Class and can be upgraded if requested. Shipping will not be carried out over weekends (Fridays and Saturdays) - to ensure the eggs are in transit for as little time as possible - and will be postponed during periods of extreme weather.
Price includes postage costs.
