Description

Moose or "Zeus" as he used to be known as, is a mixed breed bull-lurcher, originally bred to be a working dog but due to his colouring was not picked to be used to work. He used to belong to a friend who had him since he was 12 weeks or so from original breeder. She has 5 kids and couldn't cope with his needs so was looking to rehome him at a year old. I decided to step in to help out but unfortunately my home can not offer him what he needs either. He needs to be working, he needs to be busy and cannot cope with the laid back "couch potato" lifestyle we can offer him. He gets a minimum of an hour walk a day, has a toy box brimmed, and another dog here to play with and a huge garden to play in, but it is not enough for him and his destructiveness is becoming unbearable. Every day he is destroying something in the house, sometimes its something small like a kitchen sponge, other times its clothing, blankets, brushes, or whatever he can find, he cannot have a bed in his crate as he will shred it and has a pile of blankets which he will occasionally shred but is cheaper to replace than a new bed every week. He was destroying sofas and furniture in his old home although has never done that here in the year that we have had him. He has been with us about a year now. And although his behaviour has improved somewhat it's now beyond what we have time or energy to cope with. He eats 2 meals a day, treats, etc. He is crate trained and used to sleep in his crate at night in his old house but sleeps in our bedroom with us and the other dog now. However he needs to be crated when you leave him at home during the day as he will destroy stuff. His recall isn't great so tend not to walk him off lead unless in a closed off area which he gets once a week at a dog park. He is great with babies, small children and other dogs and cats as was raised in a house with newborn up to 10 years old and cats, however small furries like rabbits are a no go as he is known to catch and kill rabbits in the garden here or on walks even though hes on a lead, so his prey drive is quite high. He needs a REALLY active home, ideally with another dog however would be fine on his own getting all the attention as he is a cuddle bug. He is VERY vocal and will often scream and cry when you leave him at home to go out unless distracted with a jumbone, peanut butter on a toy or some kind of treat. He will counter surf in kitchens and go through bins. He is a bull lurcher and lurchers are well known for "lurching" no matter how much you tell them off. He will steal food off your plate when not looking and will take things out your bag and you will find all sorts of "treasures" in his crate quite often. After lots of training he now walks well on the lead and we use a chest clip harness as this was the only thing that helped towards him not pulling on walks, he is microchipped and had his first jabs, up to date with flea and worm (we use itch brand) he is good in the bath although not a fan he will tolerate it. He has a lovely temprement and is very loving, no reactivity at all, he's just turned 2 so still very much a puppy at heart. He needs a SUPER active home, maybe someone that could take him to work with them if they could cope with him, you cant leave him in the car/van as he will scream and scream and scream. Due to our working schedule we simply cannot walk him for longer than an hour a day and cannot afford a dog walker to take him out on top of our daily walk with him either. We were doing that for a while but it was just too expensive long term. He is a moany boy and will whine when he wants something or is unhappy about something - classic lurcher stuff. He is very loyal and sweet natured and loves his cuddles on the sofa, good with having his nails cut which do seem to grow quite fast. No health problems despite being all white - hearing and eye sight are perfect. He has a scar on his nose from being attacked by one of his doggy friends as a puppy however luckily this has had no affect on his temprement or love for other dogs and still loved the dog that bit him (other dog was sadly euthanised due to behaviour problems) Moose has been castrated after this incident as he began scent marking and he was less than a year old when this happened. He loves his doggy pal here and loves all other dogs so so much, never ever had a problem with him making doggy friends which is so lovely. He needs a five star home with someone that understands his breed, his needs and can provide him the home that he needs that can make him happy and fulfilled and hopefully less destructive. I think if you did want to put him to "work" rabbiting etc he would love it and do a really good job! Or maybe someone that can walk him for 2+ hours a day! He also loves to dig so needs to be somewhere he's free to do that as your garden will not stay nice with him living with you. He has 0 food reactivity, and was often caught deliberately sharing his food with puppies he was staying with. He would grab a mouthful and put it out for the puppy to eat - not ideal but very cute nonetheless. He used to be graze fed - he had access to his biscuits all day but he now has 2 meals a day, morning and evening and he will not let you forget what time it is when food is due. He loves his toys but he is a shredder so soft toys are pointless, he does love a ball and things to chew/shred - which we do provide but he will still find things he shouldn't and shred or destroy those too. We absolutely adore him but realise we cannot offer him the activity or life he needs to be fulfilled and cant afford the constant damages to things in the home with his boredom and destructive nature and feel he would be much happier in a more active home where he can have hours of exercise and attention, even being put to work if possible. We will not allow him to go to just anyone and will need to do homechecks and meet you a good handful of times to get to know you and assess the match.
