Description
Brutus is a large eight-year-old male. He is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
Brutus arrived in the UK in June 2023 after being rescued from Romania. When he first came off transport he was extremely nervous and shut down, taking more than an hour to leave the van. In the early days he was very withdrawn and preferred to stay in his kennel where he felt safe.
Over time Brutus began to grow in confidence, particularly when moved to a quieter kennel. He remains a nervous dog but he loves his walk and having a zoom in the paddock as long as he isn't left alone, he toilets a lot in his kennel even after being outside so would need a home where they are confident toilet training him and preferably with hard floors.
Brutus does not like to share his kennel space with other dogs but will walk alongside them calmly and has made friends with some dogs he meets regularly in the paddocks. With slow introductions, it is felt he could live with another calm, steady dog in the right, experienced home. He
may also be able to live with a dog-savvy cat.
Brutus doesn't like to be picked up but he enjoys a fuss and a cuddle once he knows you, often leaning in for support when he's feeling a bit anxious. He prefers people to give him space and time to build trust. With handlers he knows, such as our volunteer Julie, Brutus has made good progress. He now enjoys going for walks up the field with her, and gets very excited to see her, seeking affection and will even take treats from her.
Brutus is a gentle, quiet soul who finds change and handling difficult. He will need a patient and understanding home willing to give him as much time as he needs to adjust. A secure garden is essential so that he can exercise safely while gaining confidence in his new environment.
Due to his nervous nature Brutus should travel in a secure crate. He would be best suited to a calm, adult-only home (18+) with experience of nervous or shut-down dogs. His new family will need to accept that Brutus may take a long time to feel fully settled, but with kindness and consistency he will continue to make gradual progress in his own time.
Brutus has developed some reactivity issues on his walks and has attempted to redirect on occasion, due to this he is now undergoing muzzle training and will need to be worked up to wearing one.
