Description
I've found myself with a profusion of happy healthy hissers that need new homes! These guys make for excellent pets- low maintenance and willing to tolerate handling, or can be used as feeders for some animals.
Madagascar giant hissing cockroaches are highly social animals with interesting behaviors to observe. Please do not keep them singly- they will get depressed and it will negatively impact their health.
They do best in a plastic bin with air holes or an aquarium with a secure lid. Be warned- they can chew through window screen like materials. However they cannot cross a thick application of Vaseline, which makes it far easier to secure them. A healthy amount of substrate with one side kept dry and the other damp is ideal, alongside a heat source (like a heat mat or warm room) and a well rounded diet. They can eat many types of kitchen scraps as well as prepared foods meant for other pets. I give mine dog kibble alongside fruit and vegetable scraps and they love it. They also need places to hide- providing some cork bark or egg crate works perfectly. A clean-up crew of isopods and/or springtails will spare you the chore of cleaning up bug poop.
