Description
We are regrettably having to rehome the family dog, Astro, not because we don’t love him, but because he is a naturally nervous boy due to the start of his life in Romania, and despite vetting and assessment being carried out on our family and home, it is sadly not the right place for this lovely boy after a year of having him. He is easily scared by sudden noises and high levels of persistent noise, and this puts an undue stress on him making him unhappy and unable to cope. We have two young children and are undertaking a building project, creating a busy, loud, and chaotic world for Astro. Despite our efforts, his reactions have worsened in this environment, and we now know he needs a calm space to thrive, be happy and relaxed and to flourish in a new home.
Astro is currently being fostered by my parents, who live in a quiet, rural home. My father already has 2 rescue dogs so unfortunately cannot keep him. Astro has shown signs of positive change in a very short period since going to stay with my parents. He is much happier, calmer, and relaxed in a quieter home and the true well mannered young gentlemen of a dog is shining through. He is far less reactive, hardly at all and it’s clear he needs a peaceful, stable environment to be his best self.
Astro is a 2-year-old mixed breed rescue from Romania. He is medium in size weighing in around 26 kilos. He needs a good amount of exercise each day but can get much of this from playing in a medium to large garden.
He has shown himself to be very intelligent, fast learner, curious, observant and affectionate and is deeply loyal once he bonds wanting to be by your side. He sits nicely to start a walk and can be excited at the start pulling a bit, but he soon settles into calm, loose-lead walk. He will want to chase a squirrel or cat so a firm hand on the lead is always required just in case! He is happy to meet other dogs and loves a good sniff. At the moment he couldn’t be off the lead in case he was suddenly scared and bolted off, but his recall is improving.
Any unfamiliar situations or noises will scare Astro and he reacts when he doesn’t feel safe, pulling away from the situation. It’s important to mention that Astro’s reactivity is fear-driven, it is not aggression to people or other dogs.
He’s a sensitive soul and needs an experienced owner who understands anxious dogs and can offer reassurance, has the patience to introduce him to these new aspects of everyday life and will be his protector whilst he does. He will become a beautiful, fun, playful, loyal companion and grow into a handsome boy for sure.
He would suit:
* An adult-only home
* A quiet environment - this is essential
* Someone experienced with nervous dogs
* Another dog in the home would do wonders for his confidence as he loves to make friends and play - this is not crucial but highly recommended.
He would not suit:
* Homes with children. The toys and noise that come with small humans are just too much for him.
* Homes with cats - he is not cat friendly
* Busy households or first-time dog owners due to his nervousness
* Busy urban town environments, especially with any amount of vehicle traffic nearby.
We won’t be sending Astro to a new home with just anyone, we have criteria that must be met for Astro to be happy in his new home and for you to be happy with Astro. We will want to start with phone or video calls to share additional information about him and ensure the right match for this lovely boy. Once we’ve spoken and everyone is still on board we’d love for you to come and meet him.
He is fully vaccinated, neutered, brucella tested before travel to the UK (negative), and has his medical history and passport. Whilst we are not selling Astro and are not looking to recoup the adoption fee we paid, we will be asking for a £200 donation to be made to the rescue charity that brought him here from Romania. We’re working with Amicii to find Astro the right home and this donation will mean that Amicii will provide you with support should you ever need it.
This is a tough decision for us, and we are tremendously sad that Astro isn’t coping here. We adore this bright and loving boy and are committed to finding him the right forever home.
If you can offer Astro the calm and understanding he needs, please get in touch to find out more about him.
