Description

Gus is our 5 year old full pedigree KC registered GSD we love him dearly and it breaks our hearts but due to changes in circumstances we need to re-home him. his parents were both hip scored and are 0.0 and 0.1. my wife has had him since he was 8 weeks old. He will require an adult only home with no other dogs or cats. He's gentle and affectionate in the home and he's very chilled most of the time, he'll have random outbursts of overexcitment like any dog. He is reactive to the vacuum cleaner, he barks and tries to bite the vacuum cleaner. We are still working on training this out of him. He walks well on a lead and he wears a haltie as he is 48kg and a powerful dog. He doesn't mind the haltie as he's used to it and has been walked on it for the last 3 years. He gets overexcited when visitors come over because he wants attention from them, he looks intimidating but as soon as the say hello and give him attention he's fine and is happy with visitors in the home. He loves people but isn't keen on dogs and cats. He hasn't been socialised properly with other dogs. he was bitten by a dog at 8 months old and he is warey of other dogs. He used to be very reactive to other dogs out and about but we have click trained him so on walks he is now generally very good when other dogs are around (on lead) but we don't let him off around other dogs just incase. His recall is good when there are no distractions around, and he'll always come back for a ball or a treat! He's has good food drive and is an intelligent dog so easily trained, with someone willing to put the effort in with him. He's trained not to eat from his bowl until told to and will let you take it away if needed. He doesn't resource guard his food. He'll sit and wait at the back door to go in the garden until told too. And his wait command is generally good unless he's over excited... He is fine to be left in the house for up to 6 hours, he just sleeps on the rare occasion we have to leave him that long. He is not good at the vets, he gets very scared and distressed there. He is muzzle trained and he will put it on willingly and doesn't associate it with the vets or "bad things". (We will put it on in the car whether we're going for a walk or to the vets so he doesn't associate it with bad things.) He has a bite history: 2 years old, when he had a plastic bag in his mouth and I went to get it off of him he bit me on the hand with a puncture to the hand. (I think he was trying to get the bag back off of me) Around the same time when he was being neutered he had been sedated and was in the back of the car at the vets and my wife went to put the muzzle on him (before he was muzzle trained) he warned her a couple of times then bit her on her arm. After this is when we muzzle trained him. Since he was neutered he has lost the alpha streak in him and is very soppy and affectionate. In March this year I was toweling him off and he bit my hand when I brushed his penis. Just to note a few weeks before this he had 'smeg' coming from his penis with a suspected infection. But it had cleared up before this incident. We took him to the vets 4 days later where they checked him over and did blood and urine tests and couldn't find anything wrong with him. He's such a lovely dog and loves attention, people and being outside. We love him so much and just want him to have a lovely home, if my wife wasn't pregnant we wouldn't even consider re-homing him. We want a home where he'll be well looked after with an adult only home. We spoke to a behaviourist because of the recent bite incident and my wife being pregnant with our first child. He is well regarded in his field, we gave him all the information on Gus and he has stated that he wouldn't be comfortable working with Gus knowing a baby is coming into the house and he spoke with a German shepherd behaviourist. They both agreed that he should be re-homed. If there's any other information you need please don't hesitate to contact me. It says £75 but we do not want any money for him. We just want him to go to a loving home.
