Description

Teddy is a well loved dog who for most of his early life was bought up in a single person household. Teddy was diagnosed with psuedomonas at a young age and it took a few years to clear the infection in his ears, as a result of the constant ear treatment and pain, Teddy initially became anxious with dogs going near to his ears and didn’t respond well to being groomed. Since the infection has cleared, Teddy has been reintroduced to other dogs and has responded well to playing off lead. His recall needs some work again, but he will usually run back if you have a treat. I personally don’t feel that Teddy would take well to living with another dog as he loves to be the centre of attention and resource guards. From my experience, Teddy will resource guard things that he should not have but does not resource guard his toys from people. He will drop items as long as there is a treat to distract but if you were to take it from him he would bite. I am able to take toys from his mouth as I can determine the difference between a play growl and a reactive growl. Teddy will resource guard food but he does let me approach his bowl, he would resource guard a pigs ear for example and would growl if you approached him, I avoid giving him anything like this for that reason. Teddy is sensitive to chicken and beef, I only give him natural treats such as venison, duck, fish treats. He is fed dry food ‘Growling Tums- Duck with parsnip, beetroot, orange asparagus and pumpkin’ after trying lots of different foods, this one really agrees with him. He is sneaky and will jump up at the kitchen sides, he can pull boxes/ food off the side if not kept out of reach. He will get down after being told but there needs to be more training to help stop this. His new home will need to be ‘Teddy proofed’ this will mostly consist of moving items such as books to higher shelves, keeping tissue boxes out of reach etc he never goes for wires or destructs in the home. Teddy loves walking and enjoys having zoomies when on an extended lead. He does also go for short runs with me. He enjoys fetching a frisbee or ball but he will only do this for a treat. Teddy walks best on a neck collar rather than a harness, he does sometimes pull; all in all he walks quite well on the lead, he will have the occasional bark at another dog but this is few and far between. He loves going in to streams and gets excited when pulling up at familiar places. Teddy has not taken well to a male partner moving in to my home, he used to lunge at him from across the room and bit him when guarding the sofa a few years ago. He has not bit since as we did a lot of work around my partner feeding him and walking him on his own however he has recently starting guarding me and my baby for example, when my partner walks in to the room he will growl and sometimes lunge towards him. This seems to only happen when I am sat on the sofa. The sofa appears to be a trigger for Teddy, we do not allow him to sit on the sofa when we are on it due to him growling. If I sit one side of the sofa and someone sits the other side, Teddy will often stand on his back legs and put his paws on their knees asking for a fuss, if he is stroked for a period of time in this position, he has been known to growl and lunge at the person giving him the attention (almost like he is guarding me/ the sofa). He doesn’t do well with being stroked ‘for too long’ which is confusing as he absolutely craves attention and fuss! If stroked for too long he sometimes growls, this does not tend to happen when I stroke him. I advise people to give him small fusses at a time and he will often paw for more. Teddy will give kisses, lie down, roll over, high five, spin and give paw for a treat. He loves to put all of his toys in a pile and enjoys playing tug of war. I used to take Teddy to the pub/ in to a restaurant setting but I no longer do this due to him guarding food on the tables, with some training and possibly the use of a muzzle this may become possible again. He gets nervous when he goes to the vets because of his previous experience of pain when having his ears examined, he stays in the car or can wait in the waiting room with a muzzle, he has never bitten a vet or another dog but he has growled whilst waiting. Teddy goes to a groomers and appears to cope ok with it, I no longer groom him as he has gone for me when picking him up and has bitten me when trying to brush his tail. He often goes to the kennels and copes really well with this, he seems to really enjoy it (I will provide kennel details on request as everyone knows him there and I would like it if he carried on going if new owners were to go on holiday). Teddy is ok at being left at home for a long period of time (as long as he is thrown a treat/ given a distraction. He never has accidents in the house and is well toilet trained. If you understand Teddy’s triggers and you do not have or intend to have children in the home he could be a lovely dog for you with a bit of work. It’s been such a hard decision to rehome him and one I have been putting off for a while but my partner is constantly anxious when downstairs and is frightened that our baby may get in between a growl/ lunge situation. He is due to be weaned on to food soon and this will be a big problem due to the resource guarding. Due to the set up of our home, it would not be safe/ practical to have our baby and Teddy in the same room as baby will not know Teddy’s triggers. Teddy is loved so much but the resource guarding and the fact he has previously bit is too much of a risk. I have no other option but to find him a new home. I would like to visit the new home where he will be going to and I would also like to go on a walk with you. I need to ensure that he is going to someone who will put the time and effort in with him and will love him as much as I do.
